camper gas bottle question/idea

Postby Luke » Mon Oct 20, 2008 9:41 pm

just had a thought

could i run my campers gas ie cooker and heater off an LPG tank rther than a normal gas bottle :?:

only it would fit in the space i have better and i could refill it at any LPG station

surely its only tapping off the gas regulating it down the same way as it does on a gas bottle :?

probably only reason they don't fit on new campers is cost and space can't be a specific distance gas bottle is supposed to be from source of ignition otherwise patio heaters and bbqs wouldn't exist so unlikely to apply in camper altho common sense an pessimism would suggest a bit of distance from heat source

Luke.....On a car LPG Tank the gas is taken out from the bottom of the tank as a liquid.......same as Petrol.......

The LPG in a bottle is taken from the top..... as a gas

Trying to run say a cooker, or fire off the liquid would cause the regulator to freeze-up and stop the flow....

That's why a car Reg. has hot water flowing through it!!!

ive been looking and i think now what i might do is use one of the bottles but put it at the back of the cuboard (in a less usefull space) :D

but if i used a tank could i just not weld an ½" bsp socket to the top and take off that :D are the tanks subject to the same pressure as the bottles :?: and what is it :?:

Weld to a Pressure Vessel

Luke, You DO NOT weld to a gas bottle.........

Have you a death wish?

Yes they have the same pressure........

In the region of 300 psi.........

There are ways of doing what you want but....

I'm not saying on an open Forum!

So are you saying the regulator on an LPG set up uses hot engine water flowing through it to stop it freezing up? If so what happens before the engine warms up or is it neccessary to warm it up on petrol 1st?

i do it at work :D pipework welding is subjected to the same pressures and you dont need to be coded - i only have to get a coded welder in to do the large volume stuff :D

anyway i think for simplicity i'm gonna go for a refillable bottle like the one in the link i can store it in an inaccesable place - after going over my plans ive got the fuel tanks and 2 water tanks under the floor so i havent got that much space there :D

The reason you can't run gas appliances from an Auto-gas (car tank) or a gas bottle on its side is that you could end up with liquid gas at the appliance burner instead of gas vapour. When the liquid gas hits the air it will expand rapidly with devastating consequences in the enclosed space or a van or camper when you apply a flame to light the appliance.

found this on ebay :arrow:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/20-Litre-Refillab ... 18Q2el1247

at £420 it's too steep for me but it seems to do what i was thinking :)

20 Litre Refillable LPG Tank and Fitting Accessories
Description
This is a 20 litre refillable LPG tank. We fit these to the underside of all of our vans so that gas bottles are a thing of the past. All you need to do with these is to fill up at the petrol station and save yourself nearly 75% on the cost of normal gas bottles. Another plus point for these is that you do not need to wait until it is empty to fill up, you can top up at any time, so no more running out of gas!

These kits come with everything you will need to fit the tanks onto your van;

Tank
Fitting bracket
3m filler pipe
Flush fitting filler point
Regulator
Connector
LED dashboard gauge

Tank is 200mm diameter and approx 717mm long.
This is definately something you can fit yourself although we always advise that you get your handywork checked and tested by a LPG trained and certified fitter.

To have just one bottle of gas which could be bolted under the chassis which would power the engine, cooker, fridge, heater, ect.. does sound like a very good idea..... 8) ....

I just have a medium sized Calor gas bottle in the back of the van so i can easily exchange it but it takes up loads of space, id luv to place one under the chassis ot of the way.

But are the usual motorhome gas powerd equiptment happy about running on gas made for vehicles?

And that part about how a gas comes out of the top of a LPG (typical domestic type) bottle as gas and how AutoGas exits as a liquid is a bit worrying... :( ....

Defo more info is needed on this....... :D ......
