Fuse box - how many and fuse sizes

Postby Luke » Tue Jan 27, 2009 6:38 pm

for my camper conversion, i'm thinking of installing the 240v i've got a 16A 240 covered male socket for mounting outside the van but i'm not sure on what fuse box size and how many fuses i'll need

I can get hold of a fuse box without much trouble, but what will i need in it :?:

so far all i can think off is

main RCD - what amps :?:
sockets - 10-13A :?
lights - 5A :?:
fridge - does anyone have this on its own fuse :?:

i'm interested in what set ups people have allready in their van :D

cheers 8)

Hi Luke,

As you are supplying the van through a 16A socket you really should not exceed that current in total, however as you will not have everything on at once and most places will limit you to 5 or 10 amps supply anyway you can do this:

RCD get the lowest current available, I think 20A is the smallest but you can use any size.
Put a 16A in for the sockets (If you are not running fires etc. you could use a 6A)
And a 6A for the lights

I'm not sure what my fridge runs off, I will look for you and let you know if you want?

Cheers,

Rob

I was actually told by one self-builder that you should also not excede a 10A Trip cos some sites use low Amp trips and if you do trip theirs you will cut the power to your neighbours on the site as well....... ....

But im sure this is the one i've bought from ScrewFix.

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/73324/Ele ... sumer-Unit

1 x 63A 30mA DP RCD
2 x MCBs (1 x 6A, 1 x 16A)
IP2X
Generous Cable Room
Raised Interior for Maximum Wiring Space
Circuit Identification Labels for Clear Understanding of Outgoing Ways

But if you look at a Consumer unit built for a camper From CBE it has a 25 Amp RCD.

Here is a few examples of units, ect from Rainbow Conversions.

I wasnt gonna fit a tv either... but i will have a laptop too and you can always watch tv on a laptop if you want to set it up.

My fridge will run from the Zig unit, both 12V and 240V. Dont know what the fuse is tho.

What Voltage lights are you going to use? Im going to stick with 12V only. Some people use 12V and 240V.

i was thinking of 240v lighting aswell - just a couple of big lights, mainly for if ive got it parked up batterys off or summat then i can still see inside :D

i think most modern campers use 12v lights and run off a 240v transformer/charger while they are hooked up :)

Yeah... i was jus gonna stick 12V in the roof and thats it... and the power will always have to run through the 2nd battery.

i suppose thinking about it i'd always have the leasure battery on, the charger will be onboard so i'll never need just 240 lights :?

my 1st mk1 camper had twin lights and it was a pain when somone who didn't know would always switch the wrong lights - then when you plugged it in they'd be on

might change my mind on that one aswell
