Leisure Battery Location

Postby zaphod79 » Sun Mar 15, 2009 9:31 pm

Any one got any ideas for where I can but the leisure battery for my new van, its a mk6 X(00) 2.4 Transit 350LWB Med roof. I used to keep it on the sliding door step of my Mk5, but the step is a shallower all over on the MK6, obviousally no space under the bonnet!

Cheers Guys

On my 52 plate i fitted it in front of original battery, you will need to remove the seat to do this, i used 2x1 to secure the battery.

I thought about that, but I want to try and use the battery I already have which is 36X18cm X24cm deep! Which i think may be too big to go there, but i will be measureing that up tomorrow evening!

Yes i think the max height you will get under front seat is 200mm, could you not fit it just behind the bulkhead behind the drivers seat and box it in then run your wires up to the over shelf if your putting in a zig unit.

Yeh already got a a zig unit from the old van, I was looking to remove the bulkhead, but I was still thinking that it might have to be behind the drivers seat, maybe integrated in to the bed section.

Not sure if your aware or not but check to see if your battery needs to be vented, if so call into your local aquarium centre and get some pipe and connectors so you can connect to the original one (i used a tee piece and taped it) and if your removing the bulkhead i would make a box to hold the battery right behind the drivers seat so ease of access later on and you can run your wires up the inside of the panelling or some plastic trunking.

I found that most proper leisure batteries were too big to fit under the seat - especially if you want a 110Ah battery.

On my 51 plate SWB I put the leisure battery against the offside rear wheel arch - as I had cupboards fitted down the offside of the van, this hides it away but leaves it accessible when necessary. It also means the battery is quite close to my Zig unit and inverter, which are mounted on the cupboard wall above and in front of the battery.

For charging while on the move I just had to run a single thick wire up to the vehicle battery (split charge relay or go for the ultimate while-you-drive solution with a Sterling battery to battery charger!).

I did have to vent it - so in went the drill through my insulated floor and eventually out the bottom of the van. I put a bit of Sikaflex around the vent pipe where it comes through the underside of the van and everything appears to be ok so far. I used plastic tubing from my wife's plant watering system - but apparently windscreen washer tubing is ideal too.

Check where your drill will come out before you start drilling...

I used some L-shaped brackets to hold the battery in place against the wheel arch and a battery bracket to hold it down to the floor.
