OK does this sound more like it.....

1) Neg wire of fridge earthed to chassis

2) Pos wire of fridge to relay 87

3) Wire from relay 30 to alternator terminal B+

Do I now need to connect this new relay to the existing one :?:

yes so that the new relay will come on after the first one comes on. On the new relay connect terminal 85 to earth and terminal 86 to terminal 87 on the existing relay, hope this helps :)

Superb - I think I've finally got it :o

My final question is.....

Will it be ok just to twist together and then crimp a spade connector to the new terminal 86 wire and the existing terminal 87 wire (old relay) :?

If so, that's me ready to go done to Maplins for a relay and some wire.

Any suggestions on the most appropriate gauge of wire would be very helpful

Thanks Ake for your help 8)

If so, that's me ready to go done to Maplins for a relay and some wire.

Any suggestions on the most appropriate gauge of wire would be very helpful  For the switch sides of the relay you only need about 0.75mm2 for the load side I would recon about 3 mm2 (not sure what that is in awg)Just make sure that it rated to the same number of amps as the fridge
Thanks Ake for your help 8)

Nae problem glad to help, I can't wait to see it when its all done :)

Hope you see this Ake :!:

I had a look at the sticker inside my fridge and where it has a box for 12V amps - the box is blank

The fridge is an Electrolux RM212, so I guess quite common for 1970's campers.

I read somewhere a fridge like this draws about 10amps - does this sound right :?:

I'm just thinking about what you said about getting the correct wiring.

Sounds about right, So if you think its 10amp then wire it for 15 and you'll not go far wrong :)
