Suppliers of fibreglass high top roofs

Postby Robcrossy » Mon Apr 13, 2009 8:29 pm

Hi, Im looking to convert my 1999 swb low roof transit into a camper. Im looking for a fibreglass / plastic aftermarket high top roof to fit onto it.
I have posted a request in the used parts section but maybe someone knows if they are still available new?
Im based in South Wales but I don`t mind a day out if its further afield.
Any help would be appriciated
Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob, Ive had a search and it does look like most converters have moved over to the MK6/MK7 due to the costs involved. i guess they think it doesnt make sense to do it to an older van.

To be honest, one of an old second hand mk5/4/3 would do. i've seen them on ebay for £200.

But im sure a conversion company will sell you one if they still have the moulds, its just i think they've stopped advertising them.. so the best way will be to contact loads of transit motorhome conversion companies and see if they still have the roofs for the MK5 ect.

Hi,
Ta for that, I`ll ring around in the week and see what I can find.
There must be one sitting in the corner of a workshop somewhere!
Failing that a scrap van with a good roof would be great. I knocked someones door earlier as it happens who had one sitting on their drive but its an ongoing project apparently and wasn`t for sale!
I guess ebay will probably be the solution - Thanks!

There is a company, I'm sure its in Leeds or somewhere close to me that supplies and fits if required. I know I was looking into this when I first started as I had my eye on a Tourneo to convert. I'll have a look to see if I still have the details

Thanks for your help!
I have spoken to them today and they do have one there. Its £700 fitted or £500 if I fit myself.
Think I`ll have to give the van a good looking over before I decide whether I want to spend that much money on it.
At least I know what Im looking at now.
Thanks again, Rob

yep, they cost a fair bit. i was in the same position myself and the one mentioned from leeds was the cheapest i found. i contacted another called leisuredrive and they quoted £2000!!!!!!

ended up just buying one with high-top already fitted, although they are very rare.

edit- think there is a massive camper scrap place in wales, maybe be able to get one from there..

A scrappy near me called silverlake near southampton has a high top SWB, or maybe MWB mk4 or 5. Roof looks ok

Maybe worth ringing them and seeing what they want for it. Cant be much and not too far, 3 hours at most.

Theres a thread in member vans that has a high top conversion going on.

Try this company.

Not sure if they will sell a roof to the 'diyer' to fit themselves, but they do make the type of roof you are looking for.
Its worth a phone call if nothing else.

Thats the link i just posted.

My van is a Leisuredrive conversion though i bought it already done.

Met a couple who had the identical conversion to mine done from brand new and i was staggered when they told me the costs. That said....you wont get much of a motorhome or camper for under £10k.

Unless you know what you are doing (ie, damn good bodywork guy), i'd imagine fitting one of these roofs is not quite as simple as it may seem.

I used to work for the company that made the original fibre glass roofs for Ford; theyre called Concargo Composites and theyre in Weston Super Mare, but I dont know if they are still trading! Your best bet is to fit a second hand one; but they are a swine! You'll need to make some bracing for the rear of the van and ofcourse some taller doors! :D
