Project Camper Connie 2 (mk5 exlwb hi-cube)pic update27/9/09

Postby Breakdown Biker » Wed Apr 15, 2009 9:43 pm

Just thought I'd post some pics of my camper conversion. I wish I'd found this site before I started as there are some awsome conversions on here and the skills some people have are incredible. I, however, have had to learn as I build because I have no previous woodwork or camper build experience. So have heart all you fellow useless gits, it could be possible to make a safe and usable camper with very little skills/cash if you really set your mind to it.
 I hope
Image
This is Connie 1 who sadly became a donor van when her chassis/floorpan disintigrated with rust. Fortunately, I'd had several years good use from her, as she was a well laid out and equipped camper. Having looked at the prices of professional conversions, it was obvious I'd need a lottery win to buy one. So the decision was made  I'll build one  Seemed like a good idea at the time. :?

After viewing many over-priced sheds up here, fleabay and a bike trip to Stoke got me the van I wanted, which was, of course, another tranny. An ex patient transport mini-bus, exlwb hi-cube 2.5d with single rear axle.
Image
It has 15" six stud wheels, and as it had a tail lift, I'm lead to believe the rear springs are heavy duty. She does sit higher than my old van, which will be handy as we often follow forestry roads to get to some really amazing camp spots.
Image

I ran the van until April 08, just doing bits and bobs, then she was sorned for the build to begin. The old van had been stripped and weighed in,as I did not have room for two vans.
Since the dimensions of the two vans were different, I decided to use all the fittings and build new cabinets to fit them in. I took the cooker, oven, sink, fridge, Zig unit, 240v system, leisure battery, wooden doors, status aerial, light fittings, captains seat, sky light, cushions and loads of other bits and bobs that could come in handy.
Sorry there's few pics of the earlier part of my build, I only recently found this site, but I'll try to quickly fill you in.
April:
Lined floor with 6mm ply on top of original as the seat mountings left gaps when removed
Image
Image
Image
Image
Run wires for 12v and 240v, Tetrasealed and insulated behind inner panels, using bubble insulation and rockwool. Installed 240v breaker and Zig unit.
Image
Image

Before insulating the roof, I cut all the holes and fitted vents, removed the big orange light
and fitted the status aerial.
Image
Image
All the vents have a wooden frame to "sandwich" fit them with plenty of silicon waterproof sealer. No leaks so far :D
Image
Image

Before replacing the roof panels, I fitted a set of lights x10 for use when hooked up to 240v. I got them from b&q and they come with a 240/12v converter. I connected them by discarding the converter, and using the original wiring for rear interior lights. They do work directly off the battery, but I only use them when hooked-up or the engine running as they pull a lot of power.
Image
Then I had to cut more holes in the side for gas locker, fridge vent and 240 hook-up.
Image
A local welder knocked up a sturdy metal box for the gas locker, big enough to take two small gas bottles. One Calor and one Macgas as it gives you more supplier options when in remote areas. You only need to swap regulators.
Image
Cut drop hole in locker floor.
Image
May:
Tinted two windows and built toilet cubicle from 12mm ply
Image
Image
Built cabinet to house sink, cooker and oven and tiled the top.
Image
Image
fitted tap, whale pump and waste outlet
Image
Ran gas pipe for cooker oven and fridge.
Image
June:
fitted captains seat and installed battery monitors in dash
Image
Image
Image
All was going well with the build till this:
Image
Became this...,
Image

on my way back from the Farmyard bike rally in June 08. Amazingly, I walked away from this with no broken bones!! I did however knacker my left shoulder and both bloody thumbs! which meant I could hardly hold a pint, never mind a drill. So nothing much happened till after Christmas when money and use of limbs returned.

I'll continue with this post when I get more time

A guy with your luck should do the Lottery! Image

That apart, great work on the build, the extra room of the Hi-Cube should be good, especially on rainy days.

I did my left thumb during a motorcycle/human cannonball road traffic accident, landing was not graceful! Image

Thanks lads, sorry for the slow response, I'm on 24hr call out just now, and the phone won't stop fookin ringin' :x This site has been a great help, especially when I've needed a wee bit motivation to get up off my tired ass and do some more work in the van. I've only joined recently, and last week the guys on here helped me sort out my table, which had been a pain to figure out. :) I'll post some more pics if the phone stays quiet :P Thanks for the positive comments they're appreciated
I must admit, I am missing the bike, but I've got another wee "bobber" project to complete  8) if I ever finish the van

Got the lockers up, and the shelf. :) Then disvovered I've drilled through the loom for the rear lights :x  Some times building a camper is like pushing water up hill
Image
Image
wired up 12v spot lights and 12v flourescents over sink and cooker
Image
Scrounged a pair of 6x9s off a mate and wired them up to entertainments console. Sounds great 8)
Image
Image
Also got the curtain rails up
Smoke detector and CO detector fitted
Image
And a fine upstanding table!!
Image
The curtains are made, the cushions are re-upholstered and I've made some cheap silver screens for the front windows. Need to build the bed base now but I need to do some welding first  That is if I can figure out how to use the mig I've borrowed  8) 8) 8)

I'm liking the double din head unit idea, I've got loads of 6x9's nocking about from most of my old modded cars, nowhere to put the buggers though   , still trying to see if I can get my vibe sub in without the missus knowing:wink:
Keep up the good work

Thanks for the nice comments lads, I'm glad you've liked my posts, as I too enjoy seeing what others are up to. :D

I've just been catching up with things on here as I've been really busy at work.. I've noticed some posts about curtains and blinds etc. so here's what i'm doing

My old van had curtains in the cab, but tbh they were rubbish. Fitting a rail is awkward and they hang down away from the window, but the worst thing was having to mop up loads of condensation every morning :P

I decided on silver internal blinds but when I priced them I nearly sh1t myself
Since i've still not won the lottery I had to make them.
Here's how they look from the outside
Image
Image

and from the inside

Image
Image
They only cost about a fiver to make and they really do the job

Here's how I made them
Image
You need some silver bubble insulation, an awning repair kit (which you can get at caravan accessory shops), and some pound shop suction cup hooks.
Trim the insulation to size and punch holes
Image
Image
load an eyelet into the holder and push through a hole, place collar on top and tap tool with a hammer
Image
Image
Image
I had a few practice shots on a couple of scraps before I made the blinds here's how the eyelets look back & front
Image
Remove the hooks from the suckers and push sucker through the hole, then secure with the hook. I found the ones with plastic hooks worked best
Image
Image
Image
Then "stick em up"
Image

Image
I'm hanging curtains in the back of the van and got one to close off the back of the cab too. They're not up yet as they'd just get filthy while I'm still building but i might put them up just for a look.

More pics tomorrow or is it today :? :?

brilliant idea, I was actually thinking along the same lines when someone posted a question about curtains somewhere else. I was thinking about that insulation material as its cheap compared to the proper silver shields.
