Mk 3 motorhome with series chassis issues!

Postby rivergypsy » Wed Apr 22, 2009 5:54 pm

Hi,
It never ceases to surprise me just how many helpful folk with good advice there are on 'type' specific sites like this. In an increasingly more dog eat dog world...I find that somewhat reassuring as it goes!
The thrust of this first posting is that our (89) Mk 3 based motorhome 'Doris' (...don't ask, she chose the name!) has just failed its MOT on account of the front offside suspender mounting point, front cross member and approx. 1.5 metres of chassis rail all largely being eaten away with rust. We can acquire a new (pattern) mounting point & front cross member but no chassis rail or chassis rail 'section'.
As things stand we're floating increasingly further up poo creek minus a paddle right now and thus more likely to have to scrap the ole' girl. This will, quite frankly, break my heart given that she sports a reconned 2.0 engine with only 2000 on the clock and the motorhome section itself in near perfect condition and working order (Legend autosleeper)
Can anyone possibly come up with a supplier of said chassis rails...or possibly the first 1.5 metres of said chassis rail for a Mk 3 from a decent and willing breaker or private based scrap job somewhere?

Hi welcome to the forum, to be honest once you start on the repairing chassis rust road it never stops, may be easier to transfer the body & engine onto another good chassis, for what the chassis repair would cost in time and money for the parts, it can be done but one hell of alot of effort has to be put in

Hi mate and welcome to the forum :)
I don't know if this will be much help as I don't know your location but I bought this 4' length from a company called C.V. Components, Garscube Rd., Glasgow. If you look closely at the label, there are some phone numbers and locations on it which might help.

I hear what you're saying m'man and logically of course you're right, but the cost of a transplant would probably far outstrip the cost of this particular chassis repair...so to an extent it kind of comes down to the lesser outlay of two evils.

Thanks for your input though

Yo Jim,
Jim...I'm a chippy by trade so a wooden replacement might look good-particularly varnished- but it just won't be as durable or practical, unfortunately! :D
On the other hand...I now know this fella called Jim who used to fabricate such sections...so I'm wondering if he still could?
