Sinks for camper conversions!

Postby markbradleyf1 » Mon May 04, 2009 7:57 pm

After nearly having a heart attack when I saw how much the local caravan centre wanted for stainless steel sinks/wash basins (£40!) I spotted some virtually identical stainless steel mixing bowels in Morrisons for only £1.99!! So I bought one and simply drilled a hole in the bottom for the plug hole. Hope this is some help to people considering doing their own camper/dayvan conversion; I'll put some photos on here soon to show how mines coming along.

Cheers for now! :D

Ebay is a good source, got my sink and cooker combo for a tenner, but I like the idea of the cheapo bowls, just getting the drainage fitting and plug sorted is the only real down side I suppose.

hi all

for those interested in going the dog bowl or similar route, when drilling stainless steel use a cadmium coated drill bit and only use it at very slow speed.... if you go at it hell for leather you will only burn the drill bit out....

See what you mean about drilling the stainless steel, took me ages! I bought a plug kit from my local caravan and camping shop but it sits a few mm proud so the sink has a few mm of water sitting in the bottom, has anyone bought a flusher fitting kit or have any ideas? thanks

I cut the hole out then make a recess in the stainless with a simple press tool. This allows the plug to sit flush with the bottom of the sink.

The simple press is two bits of shaped steel which are forced together via a large nut and bolt, this puts a shape in the stainless .

The one side of the press is the male end and has an extended plug hole shape. The other is the female and has the recess for the male extended shape to fit into.

Cut out the hole using a hole saw slowly and the buy a grill or grate from the plumbers wholesales silicone it in and hey a sink / dog bowl. The grate / grill are bought separately, I know sounds daft but who cares. I had to recently change a sink in my house and had a apprentice Plummer come and show me how to do it. The grill / grate come with a screw and nut on the end to join to a pipe or they come flat for plastic. I can't tell you how much I looked like plank in the wholesales but I got my sink changed for near nothing and learned a couple of things.
Are there no plumbers driving transit’s? why don't they help??
