PLUG INTO SINK / BOWL - FLUSH FITTING EXAMPLE.

Postby dachre » Wed May 13, 2009 8:20 pm

Hi, just thought id post an example of how to fit a flush sitting plug into a sink/bowl.

There are many different ways of doing this but a nice and simple way which gives a professional look is to make and use a mini press.

I've obviously made mine on a lathe some time ago but they can be made from any kind of shaped steel bits welded together to form a male and female press roughly the same shape as a plug fitting.

This is the plug i am fitting. Its a domestic type not the smaller camper type.

This is the mini press. Its pulls together via a threaded bar.

You can see this press is made for the domestic type plug.

This is the hole cutter i use. I am going to cut a hole in the shower tray which is made from .8mm stainless sheet.
When cutting stainless the trick is not to let the hole cutter spin up fast. Try to keep it around 300 rpm max. Use plenty of cutting fluid and pause every 10 secs to keep it cool.

It took me less than 2 mins to cut this hole and the hole cutter is still perfect, ready to go again.

Just cleaning up the hole so there isn't any sharp bits.

The plug fits. This is only a trial fit as its the wrong way around at the mo.

Now to assemble and use the press so it makes the recess in the stainless steel, this is what lets the plug sit flush.

This is the outside view.

This is the inside view.

After the press has been pulled together the recess in the stainless is left.

You can see how the new plug fitting is now sitting flush in the recess.

Even with the plug stuck in it doesn't sit high.

And lastly the plug drain fitting and gasket is fitted.

There has been no use of rubbish silicone sealant and the drain can also be interchanged with other domestic type waste systems.

There are many ways of getting a recess into the bowl and it only has to be a recess of 1mm - 2mm for the plug fitting to sit nice and flush.

So i guess the next thing for us to figure out is how to make a press without the use of a lathe for all you people out there who want a cheap sink and don't have access to a lathe.

Post the ideas so we can see......... :D :D :D :D ....

Hope this helps.

thats brilliant but why have you made the sink with the brushed finish side to the outside? you have pay extra for that finish

Cheers, the brushed finish goes on the outside and the smooth on the inside so it will clean easier when in use. You wouldn't want to use brushed on the inside of the bowl.

The sheet was an off-cut so it didn't matter so much.
