Wood for the floor?

Postby zaphod79 » Sat May 23, 2009 4:35 pm

Im about to lay the floor in the van, any one got any options including pro's and con's. Last time I painted in hammmerite, and used roll mats as insulation as well as silver laminate flooring underlay, and then a damproof layer followed by 12mm ply on top, I then coated the ply with vinyl flooring.

Pro's it was fast and easy
Con's it was quite heavy when my water sytem leaked i hadnt put the damproof layer far enough up the walls so the floor got wet. The vinyl flooring managed to end up with about a million tiny stones under it, i they were in the glue that scrounged from a deep dark little used shed at work, and it also ripped really easily.

I like the idea of using laminate flooring, but my wife's not so keen, she worries that it will get scratched far too easily, especially as im not very gentle, and im for ever just chucking my kayak and other things in there, including a lot of wet gear.

Any ideas greatlly appreciated thanks

I used laminate, but laid it after I put the units in, mainly cos I'm tight and didn't want to pay for too much , 1 pack did the whole back with 1 length left over, and secondly so if we change our mind or it gets damaged we can rip it up and start again quit easily without much fuss.

I vote for shag pile carpet, difficult to clean, but the best for confort and acoustically. And cheap enough, you can change it every year.

I'm planning on a vinyl square at the side door entrance and the rest in carpet on top of ply. Vinyl and laminate are too cold on my feet in the mornings

Here's my floor:
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=43625&hilit=linus

Pro's it was fast and easy

 how did you do that ? it tootk me several weeks :?

so the floor got wet.

I sealed it all round (also the screws on the underside), theorically no water could get between the floor and the ply.

I'm going for reflective insulation, ply on that then sealed cork tiles on top for floor, walls AND ceiling! It is great for insulation (temp. & acoustic), it always feels warm to the touch and it looks retro chic  Plus, yer mug don't break when you drop it! 8)
