Hot Water Ideas

Postby zaphod79 » Thu Jun 04, 2009 8:52 pm

Whats everyones ideas on getting hot water, on my last van i had a Calorifier pre fitted, it was only 6L but it was just right mixed with a bit of cold for two quick showers, my new van doesent have much space for one under the bonnet being a mk6.

What is everyone else going to use?
Does anyone know where to get a calorifier fitted near Leeds?
If i bought a calorifier from flebay how easy is it to fit?

Had a three way (12v 240v gas) water heater/shower/heating system in my old van and never used it. :? All the sites I've been on have good showers and we just boiled the kettle for any other needs as heating the full system was just a waste. So to save weight I've not installed one in my new van. Gonna stick with a kettle.
My boss has a van that he might be breaking (ex network rail) I could ask him about the Carver Cascade thats in it.
Where would ya be without a can of W.D?

For free hot water for washing up & showers fill as many 2 litre bottles as will fit on top of your dash (beer & cider ones are usually dark coloured & a good excuse for drinking more) :D On a sunny day it,ll be scalding by late afternoon. Remember to park facing the right way though .This works brilliantly & is ideal if you stay on basic sites or wild camp! 8)

Hi i keep considering fitting a carver water heating system but im stuggling for room in my van so i will probably pass on the idea,as i agree with some of the other answers most site have good shower facilities so id preffer to use them. But i am keeping the toilet compartment in mine as it's a pain having to get out the van at night in the rain or wind to go to the toilet block are you having a toilet compartment in your's i think there a must,it's also handy while travelling as you dont have to keep looking out for services, sorry ive gone off the original question,i remember my brother fitted a carver in a work van to wash his hands etc it caused him nothing but hassle and took a long time to heat up,but my dad had one in an avondale caravan and that was good,i surpose it depends on what sort of sites you are aiming for if it's wild camping a water heater would be handy but most campsite do have good facilities that's what ive found anyway.

Yeh i intend to have a simple toilet system that will sit on top of the shower tray, but can easily be removed so the shower can be removed.

There is no space for the Eberspacher Calorifier under the hood of the MK6 that I can see, and most of them have them fitted in to the rear load space, so I have decided to fit it under where im putting the bed. I know it needs to connect to the cooling system some how without being linked to the engine coolant, how to do it I have no idea. The one in my old van MK 5 was pre-fitted as it was Ex BT.

In the mean while i like the idea of the 2 ltr bottles, i have a solar shower at the moment, but im paranoid about it leaking so i always put it up on the roof. in addition to the 2 ltr bottle idea if you paint them black they should heat up even more, especially as you say on the dash.

as we are only ever (never say never tho :D ) intending to be wild camping, we will probably carry a solar shower in our van... that set up inside a shower tent will be better than nothing i suppose.....

Why dont you get an instantaneous water heater powered by gas that is what I have in my camper will supply hot water to your shower and sink you need a water pump to pump the water though but will supply hot water continously until your tank runs dry .

The calirofier does need to be connected to the engine coolant. Basically there is a big coil of copper pipe the hot engine water goes through and a big container for the clean water
