Good Places to Camp

Postby Breakdown Biker » Mon Jun 29, 2009 9:56 am

I've seen a lot of talk on where to find good camping places, so why don't we start a thread to list any good spots we've found :!:

I'll start it off......

Take the A77 south (Stranraer road) from Girvan approx 8 miles to a village called Lendalfoot. At the end of the village there's a picnic area lay-by.
There's no facilities, other than a couple of pic-nic tables, but it's right on the beach and you can park away from the road on a grassy area
beside the lay-by for more privacy.
The beach is lovely and there's an island that you can walk to when the tide is out, which is populated by
grey seals and other wild-life. Loads of shellfish to collect and eat, good sea fishing and some big hills to climb.

while I do think it's a good idea, there is already a site that deals with wild camping for camper and motorhomes, they have a massive list of where to wild camp all over the uk, and this forum would possibly over cluttered as you'd have to have area threads so to be able to find where things are

I take your point mate, do you have a link to the site :?:
I still think the FTF members will have good info on wild camping places but also sites where our old vans are welcome :) There's also the local knowledge that guys like you may have about your surrounding area. :)

The wildcamping forum I know (THIS ONE As already mentioned), is ok, but is more geared towards fully self-contained motorhome users, with a lot of pub carpark / layby type stop-overs.
It'd be a good idea to have something a little more orientated towards the camper / conversion and stealth camper 8) 8) types.
Lovely spot BB BTW, Ailsa Craig in the distance, did you try the Croy Brae? 8) 8) 8)

A bit out of the way but one place that sticks in mind my is Ardoil camping ground/beach on the Isle of Lewis

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=58.1853 ... 13797&z=16

There is small public toilets near the road and an old sign saying if you want to stay overnight in the camping field then you should pay somewhere in the region of £3 to a Mr so-and-so at one of the local houses

This is looking accross to the camping field from the other side of the bay:

And this is looking out to sea:

There is a shop/post office with a petrol pump only a mile or two away aswell

Strath Rory bridge, off the B9176, north of Alness

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=57.7677 ... 10378&z=13

If you go to the OS maps you can see it a lot better but unfortunatly you can't link directly to the area http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm

Not a proper camping ground but there is a huge gravely area, various grassy bits, and a track leading off to some more possible parking spots further up.

Obivously no facilities but there is a decent size fast flowing burn so you're sorted for water

The photo is poor but this is me in my old van parked just off the road at this location:

I think campsites that bar Transits should be advertised as well,
St Davids ,at red wharf bay,on Anglesey,is one.
We past the camp site and parked on the sea front,a lady parked next to us in a new motor home.
We asked if there was a campsite site near by,and she said she was staying at St Davids, and the the site was empty.
We were let through the barrier [by intercom] when we got to reception ,the guy said £28 a night and no dogs?
He said there was a dog warden on site, and he couldn't allow us to bring the dog in with us :?:
I wouldn't pay that sort of money,to be looked down on,
We found a site a few miles away on a farm, that was really good.
We drove all over the island and were glad to get back over the bridge, then stayed a few days in Conway.
I love this Transit and will not buy a newer one, just to be socially accepted.

My original plan of just going to a area and then finding a campsite, didnt work to well.
So next time we will be more prepared,I hope 8)
