fitting a window type roof vent

Postby philsgp » Sun Aug 09, 2009 9:55 am

Hi,
I am converting a LWB Hitop to a campervan and would like to hear from anyone on fitting a Roof vent (Fiamma or similar) my question is how others have overcome fitting the vent on a "ribbed" roof? what have you used to seal the area,s where the vent does,nt come into contact with roof on the outside?
Hope this makes sense!
Thanks
Phil.

What year is the van?

The MK5 fibreglass roof has a large square panel in it just the right size for a roof vent.

You need to level the surface with small fillets of wood and sealer then sandwich fit the vent onto a wooden frame again with lots of sealer
I fitted a Fiamma on my mk5 hi top, but as GB says, their roofs are different

There was a specific space to put a 400mm x 400mm roof vent in my roof but it wasn't where I wanted to put a roof vent. I guess that's one of the problems with building your own campervan.

So, like Breakdown Biker says, the next best thing is to place flat spacers on the low part of the roof surface so the vent mates all way around onto a clean, flat surface.

With lots of Silkaflex or Tigerseal as a sealing/adhesive compound.

My van has a fiamma skylight/ vent. Its leaked since the previous owner installed and leaked since ive had the van. Went up there last and gouged out as much sealer as i could and filled it full of Silkaflex, recommended as the best. Hope its job done

And the van roof is ribbed too

don't know if this will help
i fitted a fiamma turbo roof vent 400x400(good bit of kit) on my mk6 after cutting the hole i painted the edges to stop rust i used sikoflex to build up on the low parts of the ribs and put a good application of the same stuff on the underside of the vent also to help pull it down tight to the roof i had a wooden frame for the screws once all done i ran a bead of sikoflex around the outside. if you go for a fiamma roof light it maybe wise to order an extention kit for the opener a couple of quid i think depending on how big the gap is from your roof of van to the interior lining
just for good measure i dabbed a blob of sealant on the screw heads and in the holes before fitting them.
aint leaked yet and we've had the traditional english summer.
but i think you can buy a sort of putty that has a paper backing on a roll that you could use not sure of cost though? and i had plenty of sikoflex.
