Wild camping in the north of Scotland

Postby sc_BK » Mon Feb 14, 2011 8:30 pm

If anyone's ever wanting to go wilding in the Highlands and want someone to join them give us a shout, whether a night or a week away
I stay near Inverness, know some places near here and further afield. Hope to see lots of new places this year! :) 8)

There's hundreds more photos dotted about the scottish vanners forum (and thousands more on my pc!) if anyone is interested

That is the only time I've taken my van on a ferry, and I was on it twice in the same day! It's the corran ferry, only goes a stones throw across the water

im planning a trip to scotland when the van is done the only hold up is the engine then it will take a couple of weeks to get the inside done and im heading up there got family around edinburgh and lock ness im planning to visit should be late summer for the first trip then im planning to go up for new years now that will be a cold trip if you want to meet up and maybe get a few others at the same time and maybe take a tour of the scottish highlands.
Loved it when my van was the only form of transport that could make it to the end of the road without a tow in the snow. some people call it a banger i call it the black battered ex band van than ROARS.

Would you happen to know of any good places in Lochaber, preferably not too far from Fort William? I'm working up that way soon and hope to live in the van if possible. I've heard that area has a lot of 'no overnight parking' signs and from what I can remember I'm not sure if this is correct. My intention is to hopefully find 5 or 6 places where I can spend a few nights each and avoid any hassle.

How soon are you meaning?

Personally, I never pay any attention to "no overnight parking" signs. Just try to keep a low profile and don't stay in the same place for more than a night

Are you after somehwere purely to get 8hrs kip, or "proper" wild camping

I hope you know how to use google streetview, here's a few links

There's a guy on the scottish vanners forum who runs a campsite just outside Fort William, we had a meet there in november and it is a cracking place
http://www.linnhe-lochside-holidays.co.uk/
Prices aren't too bad, maybe be worth a stop atleast one night so you can get scrubbed up (very good showers there!)
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie= ... 89,,0,7.24

There's a large car park by the shore towards the south end of Fort William. I've heard of folks staying there
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie= ... 45,,0,8.36

Up past Roybridge, in Glen Roy, there is a gravely car park a few miles up.
It is absolutly DEAD up there, only an estate lodge right at the very far end and thats about it. May get a few tourists coming up during the day?
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie= ... 73,,0,4.86

Up at the very far end of Glen Nevis there's a car park where you can start a few walks from. Busy during the day but I imagine it's quiet when dark

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie= ... 8,,0,-0.32

There's also a large car park in Glen Nevis closer to Fort William. I think this is the main starting point for walking the ben so will be busy in the summer during the day. But if you turn up when it's dark, keep a low profile, and leave first thing in the morning I can see you having no problem sleeping here

Brilliant! Thanks a lot for those links... just the sort of thing I'm after. The odd night or two spent at a camp site does sound like a good idea for the sake of having access to facilities and just that bit of extra comfort. I expect it will be sometime around the end of March. Hopefully I'll have the bulk of the work done on the van by then. To be honest it's more of means to an end at the moment rather than wild camping for the fun of it although I do intend to use the van for recreation as soon as I get the chance, in fact the idea of kitting out a van was that I'll be able to enjoy it after it has served it's purpose as working accommodation. Am looking forward to a lot of walking and fishing trips and just generally seeing a lot more places. In the past I've always parked the car up and slept in the tent which is great, especially as I enjoy trekking off to some of the more wild places but a campervan offers more convenience for longer trips and also I sometimes feel uneasy about leaving the car alone overnight although I've never encountered any problems in doing so. Your photos pretty much sum up why I can't wait to get the van sorted out. If the scenery here doesn't make something stir in your blood you must have been drained dry by Count Dracula himself! :D
