Hi all,
re: above diagram. Relay 85 'connect to ignition positive' (on).
Could I find an 'ignition positive on' wire going to the radio, what colour would it be & could I connect the relay 85 to this ?
thanx

If you take the two covering halves off the steering column you should see the ignition switch with its wires - just meter out the terminals (or I think they operate in order as you turn the key so should be easy to work out) can't remember the colour but once you find the right wire just hook up to it with a scotch lock connector.

Thats how i did mine on my Mk1, but my kit came with double spade end as the wires to the ignition are all on spade ends so you may have to solder the wire on the more modern ignition :?

This is the kit i used which has a 100amp relay

Seem to have go up in price

Hi, i think i have the same split charging set up, after advice from an autoelectrician in bristol, st philips.
Its been fine, but i've only just started having problems, which i'm wondering if could be due to extra demands of winter. It splits to charge 2 leisure batteries ( i think i may have 6oamp fuses at each end), which supply 10w halogen lights and a fantastic ebersplashout ( u know what i mean) D2 Airtronic hot air blower.
Problem is actually that my starter battery ( Banner 680 cranking amps, only a year old) is struggling to start the engine. The alternator and battery have been tested and said to be ok.
(The alternator however is a bit broke, as the lower mouting has totally cracked so it is only mounted by the tensioner set-up, which looks really precarious and will do loads of damage? if it fails, as the drive belt will come loose and the alternator pulled into cause some serious mangling. It'll be fixed (replaced ) this week i hope. But like i said its been tested and providing sufficient charge. I will get that confirmed by an auto electrician.)
The leisure batteries are charging fine and not a problem. Just the starter battery.
Just wondered if this split charger set up can cope with 2 auxillary batteries and demands of winter driving with lights on and demister on hot.?

If your vehicle is only used for short runs the alternated may be struggling to cope with the load

Also, check to see if your starter motor is OK, if it's getting worn out it'll need a lot more cranking amps than the battery or the cables can handle, so will spin slower. If you feel the cables near the battery right after you've started the engine and they're very hot then it might be that you need a new starter.

I've seen the drawings where the relay is switched differently.

86 is connected to the no charge light wire coming off the alternator and 85 is connected straight to earth.

Is one of these methods of switching the relay better than the other?
