Ford A0406 steering box replacement

Postby Dyosaurus » Sun Jul 14, 2024 4:57 pm

Hi,

First off; my English is not perfect, apologies in advance.
2 years ago I bought my Ford A0406, without knowing what I actually bought.
I just fell in love with it and built it in to my perfect camper!
It's been quite reliable, but now the play on the steering wheel is slowly getting worse and worse.
The play seems to be coming from the steering box, is this interchangeable with a Ford Transit's steering box?
I can't seem to find a steering box specifically for a Ford A-series.

I've attached some pictures of my Ford A-series.

Have you tried adjusting the box backlash on the engine side of the box there is a lock nut with a screw slot in it undo the nut and screw the the screw clockwise to take up some of the play if you do it to much you can get a tight spot when I used to do them I had the axle on axle stands so you could easily feel any tight pot.
From memory the A series is more like a mk3 then a mark 2 as it has a separate steering column shaft the mk2 is a one pice and goes all the way from the box to the steering wheel.

Thanks for the great suggestion! I'm gonna give this a try tomorrow.
I do know that when I bought it (2.5 years and 45.000km ago) they did adjust the steering box (I had no clue how, oops) and the steering was really responsive for a long while.
Is adjusting the box backlash something I should do regularly?

We only used to do it when necessary it’d also worth checking for play in the universal joint on the shaft .

I have tightened the screw a bit and it has significantly improved the steering!
Thanks for the great suggestion!
