Ex-Police Underwater Search Team Van. Brake parts?

Postby foxclassics » Sat Dec 12, 2009 12:50 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, looking for some more info on A series motors. I currently have one in the yard for a friend who recently bought one.

It's an ex-police underwater search team van. Fibreglass and Ali body, running an Essex V6. It's a beast, slowly being converted into a camper.Image

Loads of jobs to do including LPG fitting, brake overhaul, exhaust fabrication, some welding and new tyres.

First thing I'm having trouble with is locating a new (or seals even) master cylinder. Are they the same as MK1 trannies? Local motor factors not able to help.....

Hi there mate, if you can get the seals out you could try a hydrollic's supplier.

Hi Chaps,

Sorry it's been a while. Was going to be even longer but other jobs off for now

Managed to strip it all out and its about a 26mm bore. I think it's the same as a MK2 tranny (thanks Fred!) but having no joy round here finding one. I know from looking at later trannies I'd need to sap the entire cylinder, servo and pedal assembly as holes don't line up etc. which is a bit more hassle than I was hoping for!

Going to try the local breakers tomorrow (if it doesn't mega snow and theyre shut!) hopefully enough snow that I can have some fun in my toy. :D

Ok finally managed to get a picture of it, appears that the layout for servo mounting is different to MK2 tranny so now I'm a bit stumped again!

Hi all,

Managed to get some more done on the van (aka LoveBug).

Fabricated a new exhaust system using a mk3 Transit silencer.

Removed the butterfly from the Hoof Governor which seems to let the engine run happier.

Changed the rear tyres for 7.50x16 LASSA's, no getting stuck in the mud now :)

Found a chap in Devon who can rebore the master cylinder and fit a stainless steel liner and new seals. Will post up his details later.

Next to do whilst waiting for the MC to come back will be making a woodburner to fit......

nelson stokes, camelford, cornwall can supply brake seals and flex hoses. my a0609 has the same seals 25mm in the front wheel cyls as two of the master cyl seals, the third is slightly deeper. I think the rear cyl also has the same as the front, lookin at the one in my spares bucket, but I haven't had those off recently to check. I have nelson part nos for these, the boots and all the flex hoses,i'll post em when I dig them out or ask for wayne their id bloke who can cross ref part nos off your old bits.the lighter a series had 19 mm slaves. don't forget to get some red rubber grease too. atb, blksmth

The master cylinder and vacuum booster can be substituted with a unit from a Chevrolet van.
This will give you a more effective dual diaphragm booster with less pedal effort and a master cylinder of the right size.
Look out for the master with the plastic reservoir which is the right type to get from the butchers.
The vacuum vill fit straight into the mounting bracket attached to the firewall.
The only things to modify is the pushrod that connects to the pedal and the fittings for the brake tubes, but they
come with the master anyway.
I have used this setup for 9 years in my A.
