Mk1 Krankenwagen guy from GER

Postby nicomk1 » Thu Nov 28, 2019 7:15 pm

Hi everyone! My name is Nico 28 years old living in Cologne. Since around 4 Years I have my MK1 Transit. I always drove old cars, like my 71' p7 20m (Taunus) which I have since nearly 10 years now. As I am a mechanic myself, working at ford headquarters in Cologne, I also always work on cars by myself. That was hard amount of work to get so far, as I only learned the modern mechanic and how to plug in the computer in cars   But learning by doing.. I am now able to do most stuff on my own, but time and place is always the problem...

Enough from me, my Transit is a mk1 '74 lwb as a "Krankenwagen" (Ex Ambulance). It has the 65hp Cologne v4 engine with 4 speed on it. Standart to the ambulances have been also a single wheel rear axle, but with the use of the massive twin wheel axle and with big heavy adaptor plates on it to ensure the correct track length, or how you call it (no nativ english). Soft springs, rear just two soft layers, single side door in the backside, and some other typical Krankenwagen stuff.
The car is on the road all the year and so a "rolling restoration" as its quite rusty, not like most Feuerwehrs. By the way in my city we have a group of around 10+ old Transit divers...
So even if its hard in Germany due to TÜV regulations and so I am converting and customising some stuff in the car, but since now not all plans have been done but I have a big list
So the plan of usage is to use it as a camper van (already visited Croatia, Corsica in holiday with it) but I also use it as a workhorse.
As it is very hard to get more info on specific Transit things in Germany and google, I hope to get here some info, whatever these will be, cause I know you guys like transits most ;)

thanks guys, just have been reading the 16 sides of how to convert to IFS. Cause my leafesprings are noisy and simply suck. Always thought of this conversion as as chassis rails should have the same distance from the mk3 but the fact that the whole mk3 subframe is bolted strait up to the front leafspring hanger, was new to me and now I'm going to have another sleepless night of thinking and thinking....
