Simply because I dont think its possible in the time. Think of the shear amount of effort that would be required to do it and make it look good.

Even if everyone does show up there there will be a limit on who can be working on the van at a time.

To be bluntly honest the only way I can see the whole idea working is to have everything done and ready to bolt on before it starts. Trying to get just descent prep and paint in a weekend would be very hard work without major body mods introducing a huge amount of extra graft!

What time scale do you have tod o this?

1 person: 45 mins with a cutting disc - rear of van removed,
1 person: with a mig welder - 2 hours welding,
2 people with grinders cleaning up the welds - 30 minutes,
4 people fitting axle, suspension, brakes - 1 hour,
6 people preping paintwork - 1 hour,
1 person spraying - 1 hour, primer - 1 hour 2 top coats.
= 7 hours 15 minutes....allowing extra time for cups of tea = 8 hours...

Now we need to set out the project plan. Aim and conclusion etc. Its important to keep within it or things get out of hand!

At some point we need to draw up a Gant chart so we can keep track of the critical phases.

I totally agree with this,if its gonna be six wheels so be it but remember its got to be simple enough for the timescale.

Of course we can do it!!!!!!My mk4 is still available with Lukes as donor vehicles and I am in contact with Luke and there should be some pics in a few days.

Now who owns "probably the best recovery vehicle in Sussex" as we need it!! To take my van from East Sussex to wherever.Plenty of publicity I`m sure.

I love the idea of the six wheeler.You never know at the end of it all I might have a divorce so could perhaps put a bid in!

I can see your point exactly and i do agree it will be very tight to get it all done ...... but imagine being involved in this and what an achevement it will be when it's done

we can get a lot of it done before hand - for example the back axle mounts etc. we can have all that pre-fab'd up leaving only the cutting and shutting to be done over the weekend we can also draw up accurate plans of where to cut so we (well the team who are doing the chop) will know where to cut how much etc. and we'll all be working in harmony
while thats going on we can also have another team working on the engine swap (again have mounts pre made) and other teams doing arches wings etc.
we can also have the doors off and the body guys can be sorting those before the cut and shut's been welded up - then the doors etc will be done then they can move onto the van sides

when i cut and shut my pickup link here it took me less than half a day in total on my own with my cousin helping out - i know it's not the same but the point is this big project can be cut down into loads of little easier jobs - i admit we are gambling on getting some more decent bodymen to sign up as at the moment we are seriously lacking in numbers but i'm sure they will come

and if we need to we can extend the weekend into monday
i was thinking along the lines of

Thursday - arrive set up - strip the donor vans
Friday - full day of work get the 2 vans joined (aswell as other jobs)
Satarday - Full day bodywork fulling and sanding making the joins look right (aswell as other jobs)
Satarday night - spray paint
Sunday - build the van back up
monday - if we need it say for example we couldnt get the join finished in time we could spray the front half of the van sat night then build up the rest of the van then mask it up and finish off the sides monday night

so come on Matt change the no to a yes
