I have a new h2l2 mk8.
It's the 125ps and power IMO is very poor. My old mk6 75ps was not much slower.
Bit disappointing!

I've just got a 125 mk8 and its not a patch on my old 115 mk7

I'm pretty pissed about it to be honest.

Just resurrecting an old thread to let you know I was really disappointed when I got my Mk8 with how sluggish the 125 engine was.

Well I've Had it remapped an dyno'd and its now shoving out a healthy 180 bhp and is a flying machine even with all my tyre machine balancer and compressor in.

I'm in love

I am also underwhelmed with our 155ps MK8. The only thing that puts me off a remap is getting probs with the DPF afterwards. If you can let us know how it is going after a few months it would be much appreciated.

All the best

I have to agree my 155 is not a patch on my old mk 7 130ps, certainly doesn't pull the same

If it has more power surely it'll generate more heat and get the crap out of the dpf?
56 350 2.2 130ps mk7 with 2 side doors 8)
65 290 2.2 125ps custom with 2 side doors 8)
07 350 170ps

Heat is not the issue, they get hot enough normally and the ECU will induce post injection to heat up the DPF as required.

Many tuned diesel engines produce more particulate as they produce more power. Hence 'No smoke, no poke'. If the map is too harsh, it will produce more particulate hence block the DPF quicker. The ECU will initiate a regen more often or in a really bad case of remapping, it cannot manage the DPF properly as it is tuned for power and not to be sympathetic to the DPF. In this case it can overload it. Many forced or ECU initiated regens are not good for the DPF long term.

Dynamic regens are where the DPF can self regenerate without ECU intervention such as long runs on motorways or dual carriageways at a constant speed and high enough exhaust temp. This is not, contrary to popular belief, caning the s**t out of it on a fast road. A dynamic regen is the most sympathetic way to regenerate the DPF and ensure its longevity.

Please don't get me wrong with the above. I am all for increasing the power of my van with a remap. I had a pre-DPF Seat Leon remapped to 200hp and it was awesome, and completely reliable. Engine and transmission wise I don't think it's a problem. But with DPFs you have to be careful with remaps, unless you are deleting the DPF, in respect of reliability and limp homes happening. Being a work van it would be really annoying having it play up all the time. Although I've been out of the motor trade a little while, I have 1st hand experience of remapped diesels with DPFs, then having issues not long afterwards. Hopefully things have changed by now (6 years) but I am still a diesel engine engineer by day. And when you turn the wick up on any diesel it will black smoke a bit more.

Thats why I am interested in the OP's experiences long term. I am all for it, just want to keep the reliability DPF wise.

To edit:

Stated incorrectly that the OP had their van remapped, I meant to say urbtree's experiences. Sorry
