I need a new key

Postby KevofCov » Wed Mar 24, 2021 8:58 pm

2016 2.2ltr RWD 3.5t

I’ve done a site search and no joy – I’ve lost one of the two keys that I have.
This make me nervous as Sods law legislates that I will soon lose the remaining key and be off the road
Whats involved in replacing the lost key? Keen to avoid a dealer...

Call around your local key providers, timpson (although they can be expensive) etc.
When you find the cheapest you need to take the key you have and your van to them, they will cut the blade in your new key and then take the machine outside, plug it into your OBD port and code it to your vehicle.
As a guide, I paid £120 4 months ago. Best price in Plymouth at the time.

Let us all know what your best price is and the company....

Yep - will detail feedback.
If there is the option (cheaper) to just have the blade I will because as soon as I spend my cash the original key will turn up.....

Quick update.

There appears to be at least two types of locks on the Mk8

Visited a locksmiths shop. ‘If we can do it it will be £70 for just a key that works – no buttons’ (all I want). Examined the key and no joy. He called another locksmith shop across the city and they could do it for sure with buttons £130.
Not enough time to drive there but on the way home I called into a Timpsons branch. ‘I can do it, no buttons £65’ The software link was down so no joy, calling back.
There is a chance that his kit can’t do it but the next nearby Timpson branch has different kit and defiantly will be able to do it.
Stay tuned will report back.

If you buy a key with no remote then you will still only have one key thet can turn off the alarm and immobiliser!!!

I'm thinking that sticking my (no buttons) key into the drivers door will open the door and turn the alarm off (didn't know I had one!)
Then sticking it into the key barrel will start the van (key has a transponder inside?). The only thing that I'll be missing out on is to be able to remote lock.

Happy to be told I'm talking tosh

2016 LWB 3.5t RWD
Another update, my local Timpsons can do it. It will take 30mins, but no remote functions, just a key that will start the van - £110.00. Bit disappointed but told that any new key cannot be cloned from an existing key, any new keys need to be programmed to the van.
Hmmm I'll try a dealer (words I'd never normally say) at this price for a comparison....

I thought anyone with a licensed FORScan can program new remotes?

Any key place can physically copy the key.
There should be loads of people who can then program the key in.

Having said that, last time I needed a new key I got it from Ford. They code it in while you wait.

Better than Mercedes, the keys are ordered pre-programmed from Germany. You can't copy or code a new remote to a car.
Bonkers, because any dealer can order a key for any car, which actually seems less secure.

Bingo.

Got a replacement key for one of the two original factory keys. (Van is a 2016 3.5t RWD) Timpsons in Bromsgrove £70. Didn't need the van or log book and I now have my spare key. Great value and super quick to replace my lost key. It does not have remote buttons. It just opens the drivers door and starts the van which is what I wanted (turn on the ignition and the drivers door, door unlock switch, opens all other locks). :D
