Seem to have erratic fuel economy

Postby motorhomer2018 » Sun Dec 05, 2021 11:24 am

Morning everyone

I drive a large motorhome that is based on a 2018 Euro 6 130hp transit. With 20,000 miles and a full Ford service history.

For most of its life it was returning 34 mpg (This is done mainly on motorways at 61mph (which is at the bottom of the maximum torque for the engine(1600rpm)))

But recently it has been returning 28mpg. (Which is a drop of 20%)

When cruising on the motorway my average mpg can be anything from low 20s to mid 40s mpg (on what feels like a flat stretch of M62) ..... But I do drive it like a white van when on trunk roads etc ...... If that make sense.
I've had the injectors changed 11000 miles ago and no alarms appear on the dash.

I try to run it on shell diesel.

Does anyone know if there might be something about to fail on the engine?

Thanks as always with any advice given.

How are you measuring mpg?

By the on-board computer.

I used to fill up and the range would read 500 miles. I once filled it up and it told me 390. That hurt :(

Measure it properly, the onboard computer is notoriously inaccurate. There are plenty of apps available.

Outside temp makes a differance, at the mo i get 380 MPTank in my fusion (1.4TDCi), in the summer i get 420MPT, in my connect (1.8TDCi) i loose the same millage in the winter except if i use recurculate on the heater i don't loose as much MPG :?

Also the dash Computor will estimate the miles per tank based on past driving, IE if you were hammering it on A roads then filled up it would estimate a lower MPT than if you'd prev been poodling along on a motorway

Also winter diesel in the UK results in poorer mpg, but the op suggests that his mpg has been stable through previous winters?

Thanks for all the input everyone.

For some reason I had it in my head it was going to be a timing problem (I've not had a recall, and I have spoken to my Ford garage).

If the weather books up this weekend I'll do a full tank to tank up the M6 and get my calculator out.

I’ve not checked mine out many times by working it out against the computer dash readout but when I have it’s been within point 3 to point 5 of a mile to the gallon difference at the moment it’s giving 32 to31.2 mpg driving at 55 to 60 mpg mixed roads driving usually it drops 2 to 3 mpg over winter and that’s also using the night heater 15 hours over the weekend. That is on the standard Ford map of 125 ps when I am sure my DPF problems are sorted and I can get down to vantuner to have him put the map back on it will improve by 2 to3 mpg .

I had something similar with my MAN Van a week ago. It will normally return early thirties mpg day in day out, and I allways drive at the speed limits and the same driving style, and all ways use Shell fuel. On the full tank I had just filled up with it would not do more that 27 mpg and I had to refill 70 miles earlier than I normally do. It’s not done that since though. :?

Mine is on super market fuel most of the time we only have 4 in town Tesco Morrisons and 2 independent and both of them have been done for credit car crimes and weights and measures problems a workmate of mine had the pump clocking up fuel and nothing comeing out of the nozzle so I would be really desperate to use them .

I don't do supermarket fuel, I won't go into the Y's and Wherefores to stop arguments.

I've been using archoil 9100 not sure if it's snake oil or not.

I got 500miles out of my 125 transit at a steady 62mph.

Hope to get it delimited and tuned in the new year.

Cheers James

As Storm Barra is going to be around I might have to postpone my trip.

But thanks for all the comments

If and when I can do a proper drive and if I get over 30(ish) I'll consider the matter nothing more than a blip.

Cheers everyone

Yes your not wrong we all know that it’s the same basic fuel that each company adds their own additives when they fill the tanker up at the refinery I do add Millers treatment sometimes but not allways but the main reason I don’t use the BP/ Shell and other independent forecourt’s is my credit card has only been scammed twice and both time’s it’s been at a BP and a jet forecourt Yes I didn’t lose out as the card company stopped the fraudulent transactions going through through but it was the hassle of getting new cards and notifying all my regular payments.
