Mk8 slow/erratic windscreen wipers

Postby Sam123 » Mon Oct 18, 2021 8:52 am

Just recently my windscreen wipers on my 2015 Mk8 starting playing up - happened overnight.

Initally they were deathly slow on any speed setting. So I thought that there may be a power/earthing/motor problem. But now they've developed a few other quirks, like the momentary press down on the wiper stalk which usually does one wipe now seems to do any number of wipes it fancies - anywhere between two and six wipes (still slowly). So this feels a bit less like a simple power/motor problem.

Does anyone have any ideas? How are the wipers controlled? I know that on Peugeot/Citroens control of a lot of the body electrical stuff is done by the clockspring/column stalks module - is it the same for this van?

Thanks.

Common for wiper linkage / spindles seizing up.
Disconnect the linkage between the 2 wipers and try to move each wiper arm individually…

To update - no update. The issue initially disappeared by itself, and didn’t reoccur for over a month. And now occurs very rarely, mainly when very cold, and goes away on restarting engine. So I haven’t yet tried to fix, but it’s feeling electrical related to me.

mine had the rain sensing wipers when I got it and it never preformed as I would expect it was never inSync with what the rain was doing on intermittent it would be to fast or to slow even on constant setting it varied in speed I have since had it deleted and back in my control it’s ok.

Another update - problem arose again, and having seen another thread on forum where wipers were overrunning/not parking due to faulty motor park switch, I bit the bullet and replaced the motor and linkage complete. This has solved the problem. And playing with the old part that came off, as Frag suggested, the old linkage is almost completely seized, I can barely move it with all my strength (motor disconnected from linkage). So it’s possible that just the linkage was the problem, and perhaps could have been fixed at least temporarily by lubing as Frag said, but I expect that the extra resistance wouldn’t have done the motor any good anyway, so I’m glad I replaced the lot. Ford part number for motor + linkage is 2485683. Cost £264 inc VAT, so not cheap. For reference, the motor alone is £250+, so may as well buy the linkage also. Problem seems to be caused by the leaky scuttle, as the old linkage was rusty and crusty.

Its a good idea to spray a little grease on all the linkages every now and then. I use white lithium
