Tyre choice.

Postby JamesHow » Wed Dec 01, 2021 7:09 pm

Hi

Wanting to upgrade my tyres.

Save removing the speed limiter and also give a smoother ride.

So either 225 75 16 or 245 75 16.

Problem is 245 are All terrain rather than mud and snow.

Have seen a pair of BF Goodrich going cheap but will they be top noisy?

I can put on the back ones and get some m/s snow for the front. (Rwd)

Cheers James

I can highly recommend Michelin Agilis CrossClimate.
I'm fitting them on all our vans, both 15" and 16" as the originals need replacing.

They have the snow symbol and M+S and look chunky.
Possibly slightly noisier than stock.

If you want decent grip in the winter but can't be bothered with swapping winter tyres, these all season tyres are the nuts.

Thanks.

I've always had winter tyres living in Yorkshire.

Just wondering if all terrain tyres will be too noisy for everyday driving?

Putting bigger tyres on won’t improve you speed limiter much better off getting it removed mine was set up off the tachograph so on the speedo it was clocking 66 mph witch for my driving’ is fast enough the main reason I had it removed was when you would catch a dickhead up on a motorway and start to pass them they would speed up and leve you out in the middle lane not been able to pass them and have to drop back behind only for them to slow down again and there’s a lot of dickheads out there.

James 100% go with the 225's if you end up getting BFGs. I'm running the 245 70's which are a fraction bigger but are right on the limit for my FWD Mk8, my mpg went down around 2mpg, slightly noisier but it isn't an issue really. the slightest of rubbing with front mudguards on full lock, had to make some modifications.. Which is why I suggest the 225's. You would also get a better load rating. The 245 75's! Forget it.. Way too big, you will lose a lot of torque, put more strain on everything, speedo will be around 5% out, mpg even worse. 245's are common in North America as their engines are way more powerful so its much less of an issue.

The handling difference was night and day on the BFG's! A real improvement in my opinion. Cross climates also excellent!

As soon as I got my Mk8 I bought a set of 245 70 16 dunlop AT20's and as far as I'm concerned they were brilliant......never had a problem...... quiet (very road biased tread pattern)....handled fine.....absorbed bumps better due to taller profile (ran them at 40 psi all round) certainly didn't make it sloppy at higher speeds.....got better mpg calculated over true distance and not what Speedo told me because I travelled further per revolution of the wheel than the 235 65's it came with.....never really noticed a loss of torque when moving off (1st gear is really low anyway)......now I'm swapping for 245 75 16's mud terrain tyres which stand 15/20mm taller again than the AT 20's.....when they arrived they looked MASSIVE  I thought I might have overdone it this time till I compared them side by side......think I might need spacers on the front to stop them rubbing on full lock.....but along with the 50mm all round suspension lift I think I'll get the look i want 8) they will be noisy but that won't bother me....my hearing is crap anyway

Can't argue with that, ambulances come with them as standard, i have them on mine now and it drives so much better, mind you it did have LingLong Ditchfinder Generals on it before

Hi I've brought a pair of cooper stt AT tyres (245 75) and the seller threw in a bf Goodrich AT too so, I just need a cheap AT tyre.

Going for its MOT first and then I will fit the tyres!

Yeap fitted the 245 75 16. They are mud terrain (cooper stt) so a bit more noisy.

I don't notice the lack of torque, but I do nice I don't run out of 1st / 2nd so quickly.

Top speed is now 66 rather than 62. - speedo is spot on now!!!

Will probably get toyo AT next time good price and quieter.

Top speed 66 - ouch.

I looked at getting an Electric Transit because it has 265 hp.
However, if its over 3.5T it comes with a 56 mph speed restrictor.
The DCIV only comes in 3.9T or 4.25t so will give it a miss. What's the point of 265hp but can only drive at 56 mph?
Plus all the hassle with the stupid 5 hours training.
Might make sense as a 3.5T van if you can live with a lower payload.

I'm just ordering a new diesel Transit, they are saying 9 months lead time. But at least the speed limiter can be turned off!

O presumed that too. The battery weight ate into the payload too much on a 3.5t vehicle hence the rise to 4.25 iirc.

Unfortunately, you have to do 5 hours training to drive an alternatively fueled van over 3.5 tonne but below 4.25 tonne on a B car licence.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/changes-to-licence-requirements-for-alternatively-fuelled-vehicles

If you have an older licence with C1 on, no need to do the 5 hour course or CPC as long as driving is under 30% of your time and mainly used to carry tools and materials.
However, as time goes on there are fewer and fewer people with C1 on their licence.

No operator licence or tacho (if used within 100km of your base).

I was going to order one electric van, but have 10 other drivers. As it happens, most of these are old enough to have C1 on their licence.
But the others would have to do the 5 hour training course, just in case they borrow the electric van. My wife doesn't have C1, so would have to do the course just in case she borrows it.

Anyway, the 56 mph limit killed it for me. I didn't bother confirming the limiter with Ford, but it's black and white in the regulations so sure it will have one.
