Retro fitting OEM HID Bi-xenon lights to 2021 350 transit

Postby Phil1977 » Mon Sep 26, 2022 8:35 pm

Hi all,

I purchased a used set of OEM Bi-xenon lights to upgrade my transit trail.

I have installed the lights but I have intermittent function.

I have looked through Forscan and changed the BCM Module from the original quad setting to HID Bi-xenon setting. This hasn’t changed anything the the lights still work intermittently when going through the light operation function. When the lights are in the off setting I have DRL on, when side lights are selected there are no front side lights on, when headlights selected the bi-xenon either flicker on and off or sometimes stay on with full and dipped beam function and one side light bulb illuminated.

Do I need to change any other codes or settings?

Has anyone carried out this upgrade with success??

Thanks

Interesting to know if it's possible.

I've been running full LED upgrade bulbs which are much better than standard.
Seemed like too much hassle to upgrade.

Got one van in our fleet with bi-xenon. Mine should be here in about a month so looking forward to seeing how good they are.

I was out in the van last night and the bi-xenon are much better than the standard headlights installed. I just have these function issues which I think is just coding. I talked to a local Ford main dealer and he said it was impossible to get them to work as he said the bi-xenon’s were self levelling and used modules on the front and rear axles. I’ve had a look and I don’t think he is correct. I also looked at images of transits with factory fitted but-xenon and my van has the same light switch with the headlight height adjustment. I can adjust the height of the bi-xenon lights with my light switch.

I would of thought someone else would of tried this conversion before but maybe no?

My '22 Transit has HIDs from factory.

I can confirm you that it doesn't have self-leveling or washers because the European rules say those are only needed if the light source is higher than 2000 lumens.

Transits, Transit Customs and some other cars with HIDs use D5S bulbs wich are 25W instead of the usual 35W HID bulbs and 25W ones are rated 2000 lumens so, no self-leveling needed.

As you said, factory HIDs adjust their height like the halogen ones, with the rotating knob on the dash.

Retrofitting should be possible for sure, must be only a coding thing.

What I can do if you're OK with FORSCan and AS BUILT data is showing or sending you the data of my OEM HID equipped Transit.

Cheers,

David

So I've paid extra for better lights that aren't actually very bright?
That's not good!

Can higher wattage HID bulbs be fitted?

Just googled it, there appear to be HID to LED upgrades available, maybe that's the way forward.

They're bright and very good, and the cornering lights are so nice on twisty roads.

It's only that they're not as bright as to require self leveling and headlamp washers.

And yes, you can install some 35W D5S bulbs but be sure to get good ones and not Chinese-AliExpress ones.

Morimoto has some, not cheap.

LEDs on a projector style headlight use to be less desirable (Not uniform light consistency although correct form/pattern).

Hi David,

This would be fantastic if you could supply me the as built codes for your OEM fitted van. I’ve only started using Forscan but it’s not too hard to navigate. Once I see your codes I’ll be able to change my own. I’m out of the UK for 4 weeks at work just now but if you can share the codes I’m sure it will help me and others wanting to do the upgrade.

Much appreciated,
Phil

Hello,

I've downloaded the ASBUILT data from my BCMii module but I can't attach it here as a file. Let me know if you want me to upload it somewhere or send it to you by email.

Note I've some non-stock parameters there like the autoclose, DPF state, regen, etc. but haven't changed anything appart from the Police Dark Mode to avoid lights turning on when opening the doors.

Cheers,

Hello again David,

Just out of curiosity, the function of the headlamp switch in the van. When my switch is set to off or automatic I have the DRL lights on during day time. When I turn the switch to side lights I only get the rear tail lights on. Do you get DRL or only rear tail lights.

One other question, the cornering lights are these the extra bulbs that are also built into the bi-xenon unit. Or are your cornering lights the bumper fog lights like some cars use.

I’m just trying to see if it is coding and my basic functions on the switch have changes since I installed the bi-xenon unit.

I found a post on another forum saying I can install a 35w led bulb in the lights and this solves my flickering.

Thanks for the help.

Cornering lights are on the same headlights, not the antifogs.

DRLs stay always on, but maybe in the side marker position or low beams they are slightly attenuated. They sure attenuate when using the turning signals (I seem to recall a FORScan option of this).

Cheers,

David

It took a few attempts to get ones that both fit and create a good beam.
Unfortunately I can't remember which ones ended up in there!

When I get my new van (10 months and counting), I'll take the LEDs out, so I can post them up.
