20B44 Transit & Transit Custom Timing Belt Inspection Date Published: 27 August 2021
Expiration Date: 03 February 2026
SUMMARY
A very small number of Transit and Transit Custom vehicles fitted with a 2.0l EcoBlue diesel engine may be affected by premature wear / delamination of the timing belt. The timing belt is situated within the engine and runs in the vehicle’s engine oil. If the engine oil in the vehicle has been subject to high levels of oil dilution and degradation it may have reduced the service life of the timing belt. A vehicle with a timing belt that has a reduced service life, could suffer a timing belt failure before the recommended service interval. If the timing belt fails the vehicle may display a warning message on the instrument cluster, the engine will suffer a loss of power, a gradual loss of braking assistance and immediate loss of steering assistance. Full control of the vehicle will be maintained to allow the vehicle to be brought to a safe and controlled stop. An inspection of the vehicles timing belt is needed, this check can be carried out while the customer waits or as part of their next service. If the timing belt is deemed to have a reduced service life it must be replaced. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT A VERY LOW PERCENTAGE OF VEHICLES WILL NEED A TIMING BELT REPLACED. DO NOT ORDER PARTS UNLESS A DAMAGED TIMING BELT IS IDENTIFIED.

PARTS SUPPLY
If after inspection the timing belt and sump need to be replaced, parts should be identified and obtained using your normal parts ordering process.
Timing Belt Inspection Procedure.
To carry out the timing belt inspection, a clear view of the inside of the oil fill hole in the top of the rocker cover is needed. For Transit RWD and AWD this is very accessible by simply removing the oil filler cap, however for Transit FWD and Transit Custom the oil filler neck will need to be removed.
This assessment of the timing belt condition is only valid at the time of the inspection. If the inspection result does not require the timing belt to be replaced but the timing belt subsequently fails before the next scheduled service interval for the timing belt, the inspecting dealer will not be held accountable for the repair.
With the oil filler cap/neck removed inspect the visible portion of the timing belt with a light.
If the timing belt has no signs of delamination (pieces missing) NO further action is required. Claim A1, A2, A3 or A4 for inspection only.
NOTE: Some of the parts in the supplied parts kits maybe listed for other production years of vehicles. This is intentional and all parts will fit correctly.
If the timing belt has visible delamination (pieces missing) on the surface, then it must be replaced. To replace the timing belt please follow the WSM 303-01A/B Engine - 2.0L EcoBlue - Timing Belt.
NOTE: The oil pump pick-up can be removed and cleaned. There is no need to replace the pickup unless it is damaged.
In addition to replacing the timing belt the oil pan must be removed and any debris removed from the oil pump pick up / strainer. To remove and replace the oil pan please follow WSM 303-01A/B Engine - 2.0L EcoBlue - Oil Pan.

It has not been possible to set operation codes for all repair operations in this FSA due to the number of possible repair combinations. Please submit a bill of material claim including all parts, labour and replacement vehicle hire required to complete the repair. The FSA no. 20B44 must be entered into the program code field. The labour time that can be claimed will vary depending on vehicle variant and if the repair is completed in combination with a routine service. One of the repair times above is to be used as part of the bill of material.
Replacement Vehicles
Vehicle hire can be claimed as part of the bill of material claim if the timing belt needs to be replaced.
Consequential Damage
If the timing belt delamination is not identified early, it could result in timing belt failure. The timing belt can fail in two ways, teeth can start to shear off the belt allowing the timing to slip or the belt can snap, both will cause poor running and lead to valve and piston contact. At this point the engine will need to be replaced.
The FSA will cover the costs of replacing the engine if it has failed due to the failure of the timing belt as described above or oil starvation due to excessive debris cause by delamination of the timing belt.
If you have identified an engine that has failed and the cause is confirmed as timing belt failure, you can bill the engine replacement to the FSA as a bill of material claim. Please submit a bill of material claim including all parts, labour and replacement vehicle hire required to complete the repair. The FSA no. 20B44 must be entered into the program code field. The labour time that can be claimed will vary depending on vehicle variant and if the repair is completed in combination with a routine service.
Displaced parts must be retained following your local warranty rules for retrospective investigation. Please ignore any emails regarding the scrapping of these parts, these parts must be retained to support the warranty claim.
FAQ
1. Can a vehicle that is outside the affected build range be added into the FSA 20B44?
No, vehicles that are outside the affected build range cannot be added into the FSA 20B44. If a vehicle outside the build range suffers from a similar failure these will need to be raised with CRC for support.
2. Why is the vehicle not flagged on Etis in FSA 20B44?
If a vehicle is not flagged in Etis for 20B44, it maybe that the vehicle does not fall within the affected build range. If the vehicle does fall within the affected build range but is not flagged on Etis it maybe that the vehicle has already been checked or repaired. For vehicles that fall within the affected build range, are not flagged on Etis and need a repair please contact
erecall@ford.com to have the FSA re-opened for that vehicle.
3. What happens if the vehicle is inspected and found to be OK, but the timing belt fails sometime after the inspection?
Should the timing belt fail after an OK inspection is completed, the vehicle must be inspected and confirmation the delaminated timing belt is the cause of the failure this must be documented. If the engine has failed due to the timing belt failing before its recommended service interval the repairs can be billed back to the FSA. Please contact
erecall@ford.com to have the FSA re-opened for the vehicle.
4. What condition must the belt be in for it to need replacement?
The timing belt surface must have visible delamination, this means small pieces of the timing belt surface must have lifted away and will have left behind visible holes in the belt surface.
5. What if the timing belt is showing signs of cracks but not delamination yet?
The engineering assessment is that a timing belt that is only showing some cracking will make it to its scheduled service interval. Belts that are only showing signs of cracking do not need to be exchanged.
6. Is service history required as part of the FSA assessment before consequential damage can be claimed?
Where available, evidence that the vehicle has been serviced following the maintenance schedule is preferred but not essential.
7. Can replacement vehicle hire be billed to the FSA?
Yes, replacement vehicle hire for the full hire term can be included in the bill of material claim if the timing belt needs to be replaced or has failed. The hire of specialist vehicles like taxies or refrigeration vehicles for example cannot be covered.
8. Is it enough that only the small portion of the timing belt is able to be inspected though the oil filler?
Yes, the timing belt will delaminate at the same rate all over the surface of the entire timing belt. Inspecting the small portion of the belt visible through the oil filler is enough to make a determination.
9. Can a claim be made for consequential damage if the vehicle failed before the launch of the FSA on 22nd January 2021?
Yes, if the vehicle failed before the launch of the FSA, the cause is confirmed as delamination of the timing belt and the repair has not yet been completed then yes it can be claimed under the FSA bill of material.
10. Can I get an authorization number for consequential damage or car hire?
No, the European Recall team cannot and will not issue authorization numbers. Please read above "Replacement Vehicles" and "Consequential Damage" for information how to claim these.
11. If the timing belt has failed and the engine is damaged can this be claimed under Consequential Damage?
Yes, please read the "Consequential Damage" section above.
12. If the engine has lost oil pressure can the oil pump be removed and replaced in extreme cases?
Yes, the oil pump can be removed if the vehicle is suffering from low oil pressure, it can also be replaced if it is damaged. This will fall under Consequential Damage.
13. Can the Vac Pump be replaced if it is full of sludge and debri?
Yes, if particles of the timing belt have blocked the oil passages in the Vac Pump and these cannot be cleared then the Vac Pump can be replaced under Consequential Damage.
14. The customer has previously paid for the timing belt or engine to be replaced due to delamination of the timing belt. Will Ford reimburse the customer?
Yes, so long as the customer has proof of the repair and that the failure was caused by delamination of the timing belt. These cases will need to be raised with the CRC.
15. Are parts available?
Yes, parts are available for the FSA.
16. Why is the engine timing belt front cover so different to the one I am taking off the vehicle, will it fit correctly?
Yes, the engine timing belt front cover will fit correctly, and this has been confirmed. The front cover may look different, but this is only cosmetic and will not affect the fit.
Claims will not be accepted after the expiration date of this action as shown on the announcement bulletin.
