Twin wheel alloy wheels

Postby dumper » Sun Mar 26, 2023 3:15 am

As I am going to be 70 this year and i don’t want to have to renew my license every year I want to down rate my 460 x bus camper conversion to 3500 kg gvw so I only need to renew my license every 3 years with every thing I normally carry in the van for a weekend away I’m 50 kgs under the limit I would like to be a bit lighter so the options I am thinking of are.

1 get some spacers made and run on single rear wheels but with running off road I would like to keep them for the better traction you get

2 get some direct replacement alloy wheels for the van changing 7 wheels to alloy should be a big saving I have tried a google search but so far not found anything if anybody knows of a supplier some help would be appreciated thanks.

Is the weight difference between steel wheels and alloys that significant? Alloys tend to be chunky castings compared to thin steel pressings, so I’m not sure the difference would be too great.

Another possible weight saver would be the seats - have you tried lifting them? I reckon the double passenger seat is probably close to 100kg. Perhaps some lightweight seats could save you 50kg+?

Hi Sam if I can find some I’d check the weight of a steel wheel first to see if it’s worth it . I have a spare one without a tire my van has a single passenger seat when I built the van I only did a basic conversion to keep the weight down as I knew I would still want to use after I’m 70 it is under the 3500 kgs I’d just want to have a bit more capacity in hand in case I needed to carry just a little bit more in the van when away .
cheers
