replacing cam follower ladder

Postby barbary » Wed Jun 25, 2025 10:50 pm

I'm planning to replace the cam followers and ladder this weekend. Anything I should know? Do I need to prime/bleed the followers before fitting? I'm assuming I don't need to have the engine at tdc. Are the 10 bolts reusable or are they stretch, like the injector ones? Anything else? I've checked the Ford service manual, but other than nice coloured pictures, there's not much information on the procedure. Thanks.

NOTE - nothing in the manual under lifters / followers ..they are called "hydraulic valve tappets" in the manual ..very little written about them except, inspect for wear ..or replace. does not tell you how to inspect them.
as far as i know, if some of the lifters are already deflated beyond what is normal ..then they may be the ones that need replacing

in cars ive done in the past they are wider in diameter and you could take them apart by smacking them down on a piece of MDF so getting the two components of them to separate or you could compress them in a vice .

But as i know nothing about the type in yours, i suggest once back together you rotate each and every cam lobe set so pointing so that they are opening valves fully and leave for an hour, so compresses and drains the tappets and resets clearance that will be 8 positions. and may take some hours. you will be able to tell if each one is done by the loose shaky rockers when the valve is fully up.

then you also have the injectors to contend with. replace with.new copper washers, clean the seats or ream if carboned up etc

knobby has said here many times re-use the bolts

Thanks for that. I've bought the whole kit so will be replacing them all. Just not sure whethether I need to somehow fill them all with oil before fitting, and if so, how you actually do this.

You don't pre fill, as far as know, the oil gets pumped into them , the engine will be very noisey when first started. for possibly over 30 minutes

google "how long do lifters take to fill up"

all the best.mark
