2.2 slow starting starter motor issue

Postby Sam123 » Tue Apr 28, 2026 1:16 pm

Just a headsup, I recently had a slow starting issue on my 2.2 Mk8. It got to the point on cold mornings where it was taking nearly 10 seconds to start, and felt a bit like if it was colder it wouldn't start at all. And even on reasonably warm days, it was taking 5 seconds to start.

I replaced all sorts trying to fix the issue, both the batteries, the alternator, and the glow plugs. Turned out it was the starter motor, which I guess had just gotten slow with age. It didn't sound particularly slow, and I'm more used to starters failing by becoming intermittent rather than slow. But a new starter fixed it and it starts instantly again now (even though the difference in cranking speed isn't audibly obvious). So don't overlook the starter, even if it sounds OK.

Been a few threads here that went on for sometime, mostly 2.2s in the mk6/7 section , like you the posters could not workout the issue until starter replaced, think they consume too much amps when they fail, leading to low voltage in the rest of the electronics as its cranking - which stops those working and not enough speed to make enough compression to start.

be nice to know your cranking amps with your new one .. (clip on ammeter needed).. but summers here .. it it will be firing within half second if its anything like mine, so hardly a anytime to read the ammeter, plus you'd get different results in the dead of the winter

all the best.mark

yeah the starters have little planet gears that get clogged up and the brushes also, strip down and a clean and lube works wonders and you can get a set of brushes for around £20 ...... or just change for new starter
