Turning off DRL on Mk8

Postby Sam123 » Tue Mar 24, 2026 11:06 am

I'd like to turn off the DRLs on my 2015 Mk8.

In Forscan there seems to be three separate lines relating to DRLs. One in central config, and the other two in another of the modules. However, even when I set each as 'disabled' or 'not configured', the DRLs still work exactly as they did before.

Am I missing something? Does anyone know how to turn them off in Forscan? Thanks

I think that they're a legal requirement, so it may not be possible to turn them off :?

It became law in February 2011 for cars and small vans and added to HGVs and PSVs in 2012

Thanks both. I'm guessing then that they can't be turned off. I just find them a bit pointless, and seems a waste of bulb life and fuel keeping them on. On the Mk7 I had they could be turned off by pulling a relay, but doesn't look to be the same on this.

Interestingly they're only MOT testable on vehicles registered after March 2018.

Power consumption is not a problem if the engine is running especially with modern alternators output as for bulb life my 65 plate had done 65 k when I sold it and the only light I changed was the led high level brake light

To follow up on this, actually turning off the DRLs did work. Previously when I was testing I was only turning on the ignition, and the DRLs were still turning on.

But now I've just finished a big van refurb and got it back on the road, since having turned the engine on, there's now no DRLs.

You will have to turn them back on for MOT

Mine's pre-March 2018, so they're not testable at the MOT, see 4.2.2 and 4.2.3 of the MOT inspection manual.
