Thanks for reply.
Finally managed to get it out and it probably might have been easier to remove it with the exhaust manifold. The only reason I did not go that route was the bolts looked well and truly rusted in and the 3 rear ones for EGR were a pain to get at.
In the end the two bolts that locate exhaust to turbo sheared off but the nut on stud came off. One nut underneath where turbo is bolted to manifold came off but was very tight. The top nut started to round off because I used a standard spline type spanner, should only have used a Hex type. The nut on the other stud underneath was difficult to access so ended up damaging that nut due to socket being at an angle. So supported engine on engine hoist, removed engine mount, OS headlight, airfilter housing and washer filler neck. Access was much easier now and should have done this at the start. Anyway using a dremel carefully cut some of the damaged nuts flange away, left overnight with more WD40 then managed to get nut off next day using a 13mm extractor socket. Inspecting the old turbo showed that the variable vanes were sticking and movement of the linkage felt very 'notchy' with it grating and getting stuck occasionally as the linkage was moved. So at least confimed the issue. Not impressed for a 43280 mile vehicle but perhaps underuse is the reason?
