Ford is f*cking us up!

Postby Damien89 » Sun Nov 22, 2015 8:55 pm

So to begin my rant, this is regarding to mpg and miles done on a whole tank of diesel.

Every time i fill up my tank i fill it full up. The distance to empty gauge shows between 425-450miles. Every time i fill up i reset the trip meter and average mpg meter.
Everyday i do the exact same route at the same speed, always.
Until the distance to empty gauge reaches 300 miles till now everything is ok because the trip meter shows that iv'e done about 125-150 miles.

After that is when things start to get fishy because when i do another 50-75 miles the distance to empty gauge loses 100-125 miles.

Now the distance to empty gauge would be showing 200 miles and the trip meter would be showing 175-200 miles.
After that when the trip meter reaches 275 miles the distance to empty gauge shows just 100 miles which means i should do 375 miles with a full tank having started with a 425-450 range and lost 75-100miles.

With a full tank the range shows 450 miles so you feel good but in reality the most iv'e done till the fuel light comes on is 325-350 miles, where have the other 100-125 miles gone? May i remind you that my route is all in extra urban areas with stop and go all the time picking up passengers and dropping them of.

Oh and another thing, i have an app on my mobile that i enter how much miles iv'e done and how much fuel iv'e used and the mpg it gives out is always 3.3mpg less then the one on the dash.

Iv'e taken these readings for the last month everytime i fill up and they are always consistent.

Dont take any notice of computer readouts.

as your doin ,fill it up reset odometer.empty tank then fill it up again.

Keep the receipt and write your miles done on it.

Go online and use a real mpg calculator that will give a accurate mpg figure.
Had a rusty old 58 plate 85 ps swb.180 thou .most reliable bus ive ever had

12 plate limited 125bhp 260 that got nicked

My rant is not about the mpg per se but about the range displayed at full tank and then 1/4 full.
Seems to me there is a cheat in the software (ala vw cheat) to show lots of miles at first and then gradually subtract more miles from the range then one has actually done on the trip meter.

My dash readout and app say the same thing, 33.2mpg. I've never run my van until it's empty but the miles to empty reading seems accurate if you take into account the amount of fuel that is probably in the tank when the gauge reads empty.

Well of course there is, because if the computer shows that i have 450 miles of range i dont expect to do just 300-325 miles when the empty tank light comes up. I feel that the computer has a cheat in the software to show more miles in the range meter than the van can actually do.

My dash shows 26mpg with really carefull driving but in reality i'm getting 23 mpg.
How much is your range when you fill it up?

Generally about 570-600.

ETA, I don't reset the average mpg reading each time I fill up as it reduces the accuracy of the computer.

570-600 miles?
Next time i fill up i wont reset the mpg reading to see if it makes any difference.

Correct, Custom not MK 8 though, but it's all relevant.

Mine is the biggest/heaviest of the mk8 so it does make a difference.
