Not a good start!!!

Postby Leehem » Sat May 31, 2014 5:23 pm

Well picked up my new Mk8 last Saturday after ordering it back in feb, and by Monday afternoon with 304 miles on the clock it's off the road with a blocked DPF and fuel leak!! Within 2 miles of picking it up I had the dash telling me it needed an engine service.... 75 miles on the clock???? Not a good start.

.
A shame none of the ecoboost engines are available in the Euro Transit.

A 2 liter ecoboost would have plenty of power compared to the diesel, and still be fairly thrifty.

Diesel is just an ungodly mess.

Diesel it is optimal engine for van as Mk8 - but not in europeans ekoterrorists version. DPF it is technological... deviation. In commercial vehicle there is no place for ecological experiments - as there is no place for assistance and homecome by taxi. This kind of car must be extreme reliable.
Engine 2,2 l it is maybe adequate for model L1H1 (or for Mondeo, Connect etc.), but definitely not for L3H3 with max. weight 4,5t.

Americans know it - but their engines instaled in Mk8 (V6 Ecoboost 365HP/570Nm and R5 3,2l diesel 200HP/470Nm) in UE are... politically incorrect. European officials know better than you, what engine you need...

Yes, they did - but not so big as in Mk8. Mk8 isn't Mk7 continuator - is bigger. Mk8 is designed as rival for Sprinter/Crafter and French/Italian triplets - they was much more bigger. Transit Mk7 wasn't competitive in load capacity.
In this situation engines 2,2 tdci from Mk7 can work in small Mk8 or in Custom - but still with doubts. But for big Mk8 models - thay are to small.
Somebody can say - 155HP it is enough. But Puma 2,2 tdci 155HP it is stilted engine. In smaller van it will work with high power per much more shorter time, than in big one - fully loaded to 3,5 or 4,5t TW.

Per 3 or 4 years Ford mounted to big Transits very good engine 3,2l 200HP (with prospect for bigger power to 250HP) - it was good, natural and correct idea for progress in Transits advancing. But suddenly European Ford began to press downsizing - now Ford is going in first line of downsizing followers - because Mercedes and VW are doing this same... But only in Europe. Americans didn't sign Kioto protocol - they are not stupid as UE ecocretins. It is funny - in USA they say that Ecoboost 3,5l V6 365HP is also downsized - but before they had V8, 5,4l EFI Triton engine ...
Economical measures of fuel consumption and exhaust emission regulations are now most important. Ford effectuated many expensive changes in engine - only for this economical measures. It is on first place. Not strong engine and good brakes...
I think - economy and ecology being as determinant - can't be a most important criterion for production of a good, safety and durable cars.
My last Transit with 2,5D engine it was Mk4. Milleage was 500.000 miles in big city - and I sold she. I can't image myself this milleage for Mk8...

Sorry - this discussion is to much heavy for my poor English. I can't say all what I want.

We run a number of L4 H2 Citroen Relays (The biggest version they offer) with the Ford 2.2 130 BHP euro 5 engines and to be honest 130bhp is sufficient to propel the van along even fully loaded with reasonable ease, but I wouldn't want any less than 130bhp

Yes, ok. But problem is elsewhere.

First:
If you have 130 HP, you use max. power in Jumbo model rather often.
If you have 200 HP, you use max. power rather rarely.

Second:
Diesel 2,2l, 130/155 HP it is stilted engine...
Diesel 3,2l, 200 HP it isn't.

In consequence in first case - you can't count on for long durability, in second case - you can. In commercial vans it is most important thing.
I don't write about driving safety and comfort...

Try to compare US Mk8 with 365 HP engine and European Mk8 with 130 or 155 HP engine. They are two completely different worlds...
In Europe you get ecological van, in US you get... good, strong van.
