Fitting roof rack to L3 H3

Postby hectors-tranny » Tue May 10, 2016 7:43 pm

Hi there. I want to fit a full aluminium roof rack to a L3 H3 Transit. Looking at the roof there does not appear to be any gutter or other obvious attachment points. Does anyone know how the roof rack is attached? Does it have to be screwed or bolted through the roof itself?

Thanks.

Well I've finally done it. In case it helps anyone else:

The caps in the roof that need to be removed to fit a roof rack are stuck down with some sort of sealant, then top-coated over. To remove I used a thin plastic trim removal tool and gently but firmly pushed round the edges of the caps to break through the sealant (the caps are quite soft and flexible round the edges). The caps then simply lift off. Don't use a metal tool or you'll scratch the roof! (Attempting to drill out the caps would be pointless, as they are only held on around the edges by the sealant.) The bolt holes for the roof rack are threaded M8 and are blind. I used silicone sealant in and around the holes to ensure a watertight seal. (Let's hope that works as my van is now fully boarded out and carpet lined!!) Attached a pic of the bolt hole without the cap.

Are these obvious when looking at the van roof?

Yes there are square recess in the roof along the sides of the van with caps in the middle of them and also some on the joints of the panels

Are the M8 threads vertically positioned or do they come off at a slight angle?

Currently struggling to think of a way to mount some aluminium extrusion to the roof lengthways whilst allowing for clearance for the curvature of the van for beams width way.

This is my issue.
I've seen someone using hockey pucks to lift bars clear of the apex of the roof to install solar panel.

Vertically positioned - as far as I could tell.
