2.2 or euro 6 2.0

Postby Eastcoast » Thu Oct 13, 2016 9:21 am

Hi guys, I'm looking to replace my mk7 for a jumbo mk8 and have been offered a pre reg 2.2, 155ps but are concerned about engine reliability.
As the new euro 6, 2.0 170ps is now available should I go for this instead?
I'll be honest my current van has had a fair share of problems but a sprinter (more reliable? ) is 5k more.
Any advice appreciated
.

2.2 have been so far pretty good, with euro 6 you have to add adblue to the system. The 2.0 is brand new so nobody knows anything about them.

Thanks, I thought they had issues with oil pumps? I sat in one today and tbh it is nothing like the mk7, seats are thin and dash looks like it's from a fiesta on steroids! The loom to rear lights etc is mounted in a plastic trunking, which is a good idea to protect wires but it's mounted within the load area, you'd have though it would be behind the structure work.?

Test drive this weekend

Early 2.2's had oil pump failures, yep seats are rubbish, its like sitting on a plank and yes mk7 dash has more storage space.

Well, test drive... It's a little more civilised than mk7, no faster, steering is numb, it still feels cheap inside
Salesman was honest when asked, yeah they have issues, engine, electrical niggles and ford want every box ticked before they'll authorise remedial work under warranty.
I've had trannys from the mk2 on and tbh if I could buy a brand new smiley 2.5di I would.

I'm so unimpressed and tired of faults with current van I'm trying a sprinter next week, even though it's 5k more.

Sprinter maintanance costs much more than ford's

Sprinter servicing is cheaper than Transit (main dealers in Kent) & they inc fuel filter/air filter on B servive. No timing belts to change unlike euro6 Transit & 3 yr unlimited warranty, better resale value etc etc

Think the servicing will prob work out even in long term.
The main issue is reliably and going by the number of issues on the Internet for trannys v sprinters you wonder what's going on, Are sprinters as bad just not documented?

My current mk7 needed it's diff bearings replacing at 37,000, Dealer wanted to help but ford flatly refused to offer any good will as it was just couple of weeks over the 3 year warranty, £2,800 bill.
Brake lights kept blowing fuse, £100's spent at dealers tracing fault, no luck. I eventually found steel plate above cabin was cutting through loom on n/s thanks to advice off a forum member.
its now surging at tickover, suspect PRV valve or worn injectors but no fault codes, it's done just 74,000 miles.

£2800 to replace the diff bearings???!!!!!! Have they gone mad?!!! They cost £500 at most and take 3 hrs to replace at most!!!!

As for surging just replace prv valve with an original one and do a computer reset with ids. A 3-4 hr job.

Correct, there isn't a Mercedes Sprinter forum so the complaints are spread more thinly than the Transit complaints.

Thanks guys, yes ford dealer would only replace the axle, reason?, labour charge and setting up loadings etc is too much hassle and cost prohibitive..
The mercedes forum is interesting, sprinters too have there faults, just not as many.
what puzzles me is ford using poor engines, both non clearance. 2.2 ,belt cam engine, 2.4 tdci , has chain/tensioners issues both have faults with PRV, ERG, injectors, etc.

My previous van was a 2.5di, 200,000 miles+ and it never missed a beat, new injectors fitted at 90,000 by sewells in leeds, cost. .. £106. Inc vat.
When you think about it technology has made modern vans more unreliable.

The stricter the emissions the more complex the control gear, I am a London Taxi Driver and started many years back with Austin engines (2.5 good, 2.25 useless) then the legendary 2.7 Nissan which did 680K (yes 680) with nothing more than an oil change, it was still going when the cab rusted out, then I had a banana Ford (good) then the 2.5 with the rattling chain (useless).

Cabs now have an Italian VM engine which are usually spent at 100K.

My 2.2 in my camper seems a good unit if regularly serviced, Sprinter, VWT6's all seem to have issues.

Time for a petrol engine?

Agree Nissan 2.7 great lumps, I had an old land cruiser 4.2 which which on 400,000 when sold, bulletproof.

I restore classic boats and many are fitted with 2.0 pintos as fitted in many old fords inc mk2 & 3 trannys, only thing that goes is the cams, easy and cheap to replace. Its also a clearance engine so if belt ever does snap no damage to pistons.

If I can find a pre reg jumbo 2.2 euro 5 at right money I'll go for that and add extra warranty otherwise there's lots of year old low mileage sprinter 313's (not 314 euro 6 ad blue ) around as all new model is due next year.
