Transit 350 H2 L3 2.2 litre diesel -query diesel filler neck

Postby NEWOSA65 » Mon Oct 30, 2017 7:03 pm

Hi Folks,
I have just bought a transit 350 '64 plate... done about 49k miles.
I filled the diesel tank to just below max today but when i arrived home there was a trace of diesel along the plastic trim below the fuel filler filler door.
I checked underneath but there was no leaks from the tank or from where the hose enters the tank - all seems dry under there.
So I am wondering where the leak is coming from. It may have been my fault but I did dry off all the excess diesel off the plastic trim when i got back home and after another drive around the block the trim seemed mildly damp again along the inside edge.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Its the first van I have owned where you have to open the passenger door to open the fuel filler door.
Any comments would be great please? I am unsure what to think?
Cheers,
Simon :)

We have a Mk8 at work and it's a right royal pain in the ringpiece to try and fill full with diesel without making a mess everywhere. When the pump cuts off when the tank is full, it seems to leave the nozzle with fuel in it.

Thanks Jim for adding that, to be honest I am unsure what to do about it. It could be left I suppose? I didn't fill the tank to the top, it was between 3/4 and full ? It wouldn't be possible for any excess fuel to be left in the pipe surely? Unless fuel is being thrown upwards into the pipe from tank to nozzle when cornering maybe? Just baffled with it! Don't know what to think. Cheers

got to be honest I hate this system, I know its there to stop accidently filling with petrol but it is almost imposable to fill the tank without spilling some and you cant brim the tank like on the older ones either

I had this problem with mine every time I filled it up , so I checked the filler hole and it had a breather hole in the bottom of it so as you lift out the nozzle the remaining fuel in the nozzle drips out and goes through the breather hole down the inside on the plastic trim and then accross the rubber of the bottom of the door.
To solve the problem fill with fuel and when you have finished leave the nozzle in for at least 10-15 second before removing it . The reminding fuel dips out then when you remove it there is no drips left, Mine is bone dry now . But yes is a sh*t design n I’ve never had to do this with any car or van before
