Hi Kev

It’s the ‘toothed’ ring on the hub that the ABS sensor reads to calculate the speed of that particular wheel. It reads all 4 wheel speeds individually and uses this to detect the brakes locking any particular wheel and release that brake to maintain steering control in the event of a skid.

The traction control uses the same sensors but limits power when it senses wheels spinning.

That’s a simplified explanation but the general principle

Hi Stuart,

What was required to change it out if you do not mind me asking?

Hi Mate

Im a little sketchy on the details now but it wasn't a big job, Jack up, caliper and disc off, cant remember if i removed the abs sensor or left it in? the trickiest bit was the wheel bearing nut, its not a normal nut, i remember having to use two screwdrivers to release the back part of the locking ring then tapping the front part loose with a hammer and chisel.

Once you get the bearing out you pull the half shaft out and tap the old tone ring off, clean the area off so you can get the new tone ring on as its obviously a press fit. Think i may have heated the ring up to get it on but it wasn't difficult to drive it home with a parallel punch working evenly around the edges.

Reverse procedure to build it back up, again the wheel bearing nut was awkward as its hard to tell if youve got it tight enough but not too tight, i jacked it up a few times after id been using the van to check for any play developing and kept listening for noise but its been fine and ive probably done about 5k miles now
