Rear 12v socket in Mk8

Postby Backbone of Britain » Sat May 19, 2018 10:26 pm

Anyone know if the mk8 has any wiring in the rear for a 12v socket. Have to keep my cool box in the rear as the apprentice is a fat git and takes up all the passenger space in the works van.

When I built my camper out of a mk8 bus there was holes in the plastic side panels to take a power sockets but I cannot remember seeing any wires but if they had they’d probably turn off 30 mins after engine turned off .maybe you can wire your own in form the consumer point on side of drivers seat or run one of those cigarette 3 socket extension leads into the back or get a smaller work mate :D

Thanks Dumper, we can’t run any cables as there is in built racking all over with a bulkhead, we aren’t allowed to drill any holes any where as the vans are checked when they come off lease and we are charged for anything and everything.so my own connection to the battery is out of the question. Also we could have a van change at any time so I really need to use any factory connections available in the rear. As for the them turning off that is something I’ve learned to deal with but as we travel a few times a day that won’t be too bad and l wish I could change the apprentice for a smaller one as he’s got no motivation anyway.

How about running it off a jump pack then use in the day charge at night

My minibus has a 12v in the rear panel next to one of the seats. Not sure if the loom is always there but its in the rear right panel if you want to have a look.
Even if not I would imagine there will be power for something down there (interior lights, towbar or similar) so as long as its not a massive drain you should be able to pick it up from somewhere.

Bugger!!! that wall is all ply lined and racked out so no chance of me getting anywhere near. Would have been handy if it was in the D pillar. Left hand side isn’t racked out so may have a look on the left if there’s one there.

What about a long extension from the front socket to the rear as there will be a gap in the bulkhead to pass it through then make a connection at the bulkhead

I’ll have to think about it, any length of cable needs to be discreet and easily removable, I’ve had 4 van swaps in the last 16 months all with a maximum of a days notice hence why I wanted to use any factory cabling and then it would of only being a matter of pulling out the accessory socket.

I think brains could be onto something. You can get the 12v fag lighter plugs with pretty long extenders these days so it would just be plugging it in. No need to mess with the van at all and can be removed in a few seconds when the time comes.
