Do I have a DPF?

Postby KevofCov » Sat Aug 04, 2018 6:27 pm

2015 2.2 RWD 3.5t LWB
Do I have a DPF? If so what does a ‘regen’ sound like? Any long term issues with them? My van spends all day on motorways at 60mph so maybe its not used? (I currently have a ‘change engine oil’ message – oil is only 6000 miles old). All thoughts welcome.

the change oil message may be caused by you turning off engine when the van is doing a regen, this causes the excess unburnt fuel to go back into oil and contaminate it, mine regens around every 100 miles, a couple of ways you can tell a regen is taking place is the engine noise becomes deeper like the exhaust is blowing but you will only notice this pulling away or revving the engine, if you put your dash display to instant mpg it will read 2or3 when regening its 1 when not and if you have a heated front screen it will come on when a regen is taking place, if I finish a journey and my van is doing a regen I let it tickover until its finished, it usually takes around 10 mins

yes not sure why, think its something to do with the screen being a big power drain ?but whatever the reason it does come on for the duration of the regen

Had a Mk6 and Mk7. Just bought a Custom Tourneo 2013.
Was having a look underneath, and spotted a lot of strange bits on the downpipe.
DPF as it turns out. Bugger as Kev said.
Surely if the regen thing is so important not to interrupt, an dedicated indication on the dash should be provided.
How does the vehicle predict your'e going to keep at a reasonable steady speed for the next 15 mins or whatever so that it can start a regen?
I probably do the same amount of local stop/start running about as most people, with quite a few 50 mile or longer jaunts.
If it's regenerating and I get stopped by road works, does coming down to a tickover interrupt the regen?

no tickover doesn't interrupt the regen but turning engine off will, depending on which dash display you have, if you have the display with the instant mpg showing when at tickover it will read 1/kph when regen is happening it will read 2or 3/kph at tickover

Ha,
I may have missed it before, but saw it happen this time. Front screen and rear screen (tourneo) both came on by themselves while driving at a fairly steady 30 on a clogged motorway.
Can't say I noticed any difference in engine note though.
They both went off after about 5 mins.

PS. I regularly notice what sounds like small timing changes while at steady speed and with steady throttle pedal. Is this normal?
I'm guessing it to be timing, based on the effects of the timing solenoid "letting go" on my Mk6 / Mk7. This is like a very tiny version of that.

I'll start looking for my heated screen light coming on - how often does a regen take place?

I've never seen the heated screen light come on (even though the screen is on), I remember someone wiring in a warning light to show when the screen was on/a regen was happening. Regens take place as and when they're needed, you can't predict it.

the screen light doesn't come on, you will have to touch the screen to feel it is on, when moving its imposible to tell van is doing regen but at tickover the exhaust will sound louder and your dash will say 2-3kph on the instant mpg bit, mine regens every 100miles
