Does anyone know if an operators licence is needed for the 470?

I thought an operators license is for when you want to run a fleet of work vans or something along those lines?

Will a 7.5 license not cover one to drive a 470?

You don't necessarily need a 7.5 tonne licence to drive a van over 3500kg, I can drive up to 7.5 tonne on my car license, but if you drive a van over 3.5T commercially, then you need an operators license, which brings all sorts of complications, and expense, to a small business.

This is precisely why there are so many overloaded 3.5T vans, and trucks, out there on the road.

True.
Plus you need a tacho.

Same for a trailer, more trouble than it's worth.

We've got a drop side mk8 and the payload is only about 1 ton. Shocking really.
We considered a trailer, but that would need a tacho and operators license.

If you are FORS registered, >3.5t is even more of a pain.

Realistically, the 3.5T limit should now be raised to at least 3.9-4.0 Tonnes GVW. Most modern larger panel vans are well able to carry this already, with better engines and braking systems than the older vans which were common when the law was brought in.

I do think that they should be speed restricted at that weight though

I’ve read somewhere that for electric vans they are going to increase the gvw to compensate for the weight of the batteries and also the categories of drivers who can drive then on a car licence

I came here with the same question as the OP. Just to confirm, does this mean I can buy and drive a Ford Transit 470 on my standard car licence (Cat B) for personal use, even if it's loaded beyond 3.5T? I want to convert a van into a camper, but the payload of ~1100 for the 350 is too low for me.

Thanks :)
