Rust....

Postby swedishlady » Sat Aug 18, 2018 5:19 pm

Hi, just brought a 3 year old mk8, I have noticed small bit of rust on the lower wheel arch.

It's where the water sprays from the wheels.

Is there anything I can do to help prevent / mitigate rust in the future in this area?

Now that you've mentioned it, I'm going to spray some ACF-50 on mine.

If it's like the Mk4/5/6/7 rusty arches, they corrode from the inside out, so by the time you see it, it's too late to stop it. It usually takes at least 5 years to materialise though :?

One thing you can do to start with is get a thick pair of gloves, then grab the inner lip of your arch hard and slide your gripped fist all the way around which forces all the mud and dirt out of the lip. It is very hard to get that stuff out even if you use a pressure washer under the arches. Best to use your hands and take all the build up out first and then proceed with the recommended rust treatments.
