Replace radio with Android radio/satnav type on mk8

Postby ADUK » Fri Nov 16, 2018 9:16 am

hi

im picking up my 2016 350 L3 H3 next week.
its the base version.

id like to swap out the stock radio for a new Android style radio.
Can the stock radio be replaced and will I have to buy any sort of conversion kit for the plastic surrounding?

I think i may need some sort of double din plastic fascia or kit?
ive see some do it on youtube but cant find much info on whats needed.

WIll i also need any sort of wiring conversion kit or connector plugs?

The radio type im after would ideally have the following:
DAB - would be preferable.
Android operating system - ideally.
External camera input - ideally have input for 1x or 4x cameras. Ive seen somebody else with a mk7 with this setup.
Google maps - Ideally google maps sat nav, or if not then something similar. Thats why i was thinking of android.

Thanks for any help.

I have just attempted to do this. It came with a kit but the steering wheel cambus kit didn't fit my van. Iv only for 4 plugs , one for the stereo, one for Ariel , hazard switch, and the fourth wasn't connected to nothing so I'm presuming it was for the Central locking button in the middle console. Also the ignition wire wasn't hooked up because it was going through the canbus kit so wouldn't turn on. I moved this to a permanent live and it worked.

Means you have to manually turn on and off the head unit. Hopefully the battery will be alive in the morning. And the steering wheel buttons do not work. I've contacted the seller so we will see

i was thinking more of putting it into the dash like ive seen done on youtube by two people. does yours just stick out on its own?

Yeah just sticks out, doesn't move but I wanted a more OEM feel. Because it's a company vehicle I didn't want it to look like I was moding it :D

The wiring harness is straight plug and play but it comes with a canbus adapter for steering wheel controls which I have but I don't have the canbus plug behind the original stereo so I'm unsure how to get that working.

hi
thats a different dash than mine

ive got the 4" screen above. that wouldnt work.

ive actually found the correct fascia replacement and bits to do it.
its not cheap if you want it supplied and fitted through.
reasonable to but the parts, but im stuck for the time at the minute.

Im just in the midst of doing a sync 3 sat nav upgrade , I'll post up some pics later in the week , basically its the ford sat nav with the Apple CarPlay built in etc .

Its going ok and I'll have it done this week but it wasn't the easiest , firstly I didn't realise the transit sync 3 system uses a 6" screen , I bought the more common 8" sync 3 screen but ive decided im going to stick with the 8" screen and have a one off set up!

Its pretty slick , I have the reversing camera sorted and also the parking sensors come up on the screen etc . I'll start a new thread later in the week , will give me something to do!

Cheers

Interesting!! I'll look out for the post.

Where did you get it from? So you already had the 6"screen?

I've got as far as I've found a replacement dash to accept a universal unit but no brass at the moment.

I bought the unit off eBay , it was originally out of a C max , like I say most of the ford range use the 8" screen , but for some reason the transit uses the 6" screen same as the fiesta . I didn't know that until I'd already purchased the 8" screen.

The Sync 3 comes with the APIM attached to the screen , the APIM is the brains of the unit. You can actually reuse your original ACM , the ACM is the actual radio unit with the amps and CD player in it. I got lucky on eBay and got the Screen APIM and another ACM for £150 . you then need a wire harness kit which you have to swap pins around on to get the unit to work that way the van wiring stays standard and can be swapped back at any time. Im just trying to finish off the programming side of things and then get the screen mounted .

I had a look at this, https://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/ford-tr ... IgQAvD_BwE
Mine is a motorhome based on a 66 transit. I contacted dynamic sounds who had the conversion unit. They told me the patch cable wasn't right and wouldn't work. This was a year ago so there may now be an updated one.
They were very helpful on the phone.
I hope this helps

I did the same, I bought a 6.5" sync 3 unit for a focus upgrade. I also didn't know there were two different sizes. There really aren't many 6.5's on ebay just my luck to get it the wrong way round. If anyone is interested in a swap let me know!

I could be a total numpty but picked up a 2018 Custom today. Was expecting to be able to use my google maps on my phone to show navigation on the screen in the van.

There is a lot of waffle about apps not being found etc but I can't for the life of me figure out how to make Waze/Android Auto/Google Maps work with it. Do I just need to admit defeat and get myself a phone holder to sit alongside?

Thanks!
I used to own a T4, don't hold it against me.

Hi exT4Owner, I got my 2020 L4H3 on Friday and had the same disappointment... seems nuts that in 2020 Ford haven't made this standard. Seems we got stitched with SYNC2.5, which isn't (obviously) Sync3, which is the one which interfaces with Waze etc. Pretty disappointing as I bought mine new and all over the Ford site there are images of this stuff working. Hoping that I am also being a numpty, and someone will tell me how to do it, before I have to fork-out for a new head-unit...
