Advice on door lock/security for a 2018 based motorhome

Postby motorhomer2018 » Tue Mar 19, 2019 1:20 pm

Afternoon everyone.

We recently took delivery of our 6 month old motorhome (18 plate) that is based on the 2.0 euro6 ecoblue engine............It doesn't have the led running lights in the front if that is important................for what is is worth, it is a lot better to drive than the Fiat based motorhome :D

I have read on numerous forums about how easy the transits are to break into

My question, well 1st of many, is if they twist off the drivers look using a pair of grips, does this mean they can drive off easily as the immobiliser is then disengaged.

Or does it only mean they can get inside and drink my whisky and use my toilet?

For piece of mind I have a disklok for the steering wheel, and a Bulldog Centaur CA2000C for the rear wheel (it doesn't fit on the front wheel)

Thanks in advance

For what I know they can gain entry and use your tooth brush as a toilet cleaner but can’t start the van.

They use a thing called a tribbie key to open the door and I think they can then turn on the ignition with it then plug into the diagnostic port to override the immobiliser to start the engine and drive off .
I also use a disco lock as it is very visible before they go to the to open up the van I have fitted the Garrison lock to the drivers door some people on hear have moved the diagnostic port and fitted a dummy one in its place and wired it up to blow up what ever is plug into it

You're talking about a Tibbe bump key, which they use to open vehicles with Tibbe locks. The Mk8 and Custom don't have Tibbe locks fitted, they have a flat key.

My key is flat.

So does that mean they can't start the motorhome without the official key?

Do I need to do something with my odb port?

They can start the van without the original key by plugging into the OBD port and programing a new key.
The new key is held next to the ignition while using the skeleton key to start the van.

There are companies selling OBD port covers. Some people install a fake port and hide the real one, or rewire the port with a different connector.

Basically you need:
1. Drivers door rep lock
2. Cover OBD port or install fake port
3. Alarm system. They will probably give up trying to work out the OBD connection (if you have secured it) if the alarm is sounding.

Thanks for all this info, and thanks for my shopping list

Basically you need:
1. Drivers door rep lock.
2. Cover OBD port or install fake port
3. Alarm system. They will probably give up trying to work out the OBD connection (if you have secured it) if the alarm is sounding.

But I am still confused re the OBD port.

The key looks quite complicated (I am not a lock smith), yes, they could program a blank, but how would they be able to turn it in the barrel?

I can appreciate that with the Tibbe system (I watched some videos last night) that they could use their ebay tool to do it..................or am I missing something re the new "flat key"

Again, thanks for all this info, it is greatly appreciated.

(PS, when I had the brake booster recall done last week, the dealer was adamant that fords can't be stolen)

Yes get a rep lock. I bought one with a rotating bezel for £140 and fitted it myself. Not too difficult, but fiddly. Lovely bit a kit - makes me feel safer anyway.

Yes, access is stupidly easy with grips on the OEM lock. Hard to see how Ford could get away with such a shocking security flaw.

No - the door lock only gains access to the vehicle, but a determined thief will no how to electrically bypass the imobiliser. A DiskLok is a really good deterrent.

Keep all curtains pulled when you leave it. Not being able to see inside is a good deterrent, and no-one knows if you're in or not.

Whilst I am picking the collective brains of the group.

Is there away to "Alarm" the door handles?

The reason being the 1st thing a would-be thief would do is try and see if the van is actually locked?

They would try one of the cab door handles, and perhaps a pressure sensor or switch would then trigger an alarm.......if that makes sense?

I got mine here: http://www.garrisonlocks.co.uk/van-lock ... 14-onwards You add the bezel as an additional item.

This is the other place that does them. Here it looks like the bezel comes with it: https://www.sussexinstallations.co.uk/p ... 14-on.html

It's a lovely heavy duty piece of kit.

When you fit one make sure you oil it well and use it from time to time mine seize up even after giving it plenty of oil when I fitted it because you never use it and wash the van regularly it can seize up had to give mine a lot of wd40 to get it working again and mine had only been on 11 months
