What engine rev's to keep my DPF happy?

Postby motorhomer2018 » Tue Apr 09, 2019 6:49 pm

Evening all.

I have a 2018 2.0 130ps euro6 transit based motorhome.

Now that I have had the 2nd injector replaced (intermittent service light (changed under Ford warranty)) I am VERY happy with it.

So that I remain that way, can you tell me how best to drive it to keep the DPF in top condition?

As it is a motorhome it does not do short journeys, but usually 2 hours down the motorway at 60mph in 6th gear @ 1500RPM. (start of the peak power)

Will this be OK.

I read somewhere that someone gets better economy by not using 6th gear.................... but I can't find the post............. so is this true as well

Thanks as always for any help given

I did post about getting better fuel economy in 5th gear in my l4, I don't understand it but it seems to be the case, my dpf blocked doing 70 on the m5 but since it went in to fords it now regens every 100 miles and not had a problem since, (done 80,000 miles since) but I still use 5th most of the time unless im doing 70mph as I feel 1500 revs at 55- 60 mph isn't enough and the engine is labouring slightly, I like to keep it at 2000

I agree, the engine is more fuel efficient, running under load at around 2000rpm rather than 1500rpm, 2000rpm is also better for accelerating, and climbing inclines.
Modern vehicles tend to be over geared to meet emissions standards, so can often be better if you're using a lower than normal gear, unless you're travelling at high speed.

Yes I agree the gearing on the MK8 don’t make sense. They seem to have gone backwards not forwards

Totally agree to high geared wast of time using 6 th gear at anything lower then 56 needs to be doing 60 to 65 to keep it in
6th gear on the flat any incline and I drop it to 5 th before it starts to die the one thing I miss about my 135 mk6 jumbo is the gearing and the power once on motorway and in top and up to speed never had to change down for hills but overall the mk8 is the better van

Yes I don’t understand why they made it so high. Also I only do short journeys and had drive to clean exhaust filter so I end up doing 30 miles just so it cleans it. Never had anything like that on my other vans so seems stupid need to do that

Diesel particulate filter and it’s supposed to take all the crap away from diesel vehicles, but apparently it’s not good because it breaks it down into smaller particles and apparently the smaller particles are getting on peoples lungs making it worse. Or so I’ve been told
