Aftermarket sat nav

Postby tt225 » Tue Sep 10, 2019 9:21 am

My old TomTom has finally packed up after 10 years so I'll be getting a replacement at some stage bit was wondering where other mk8 users positiin theirs as I can't get on with it stuck to the windscreen or balancing in the dash. Has anyone fitted one on the plastic housing top ventre of the windscreen and concealed the cable down into the 12v skt in the drivers dash top compartment?

To be honest I’ve not thought about it I just stick on the screen as I have since sat nav were sold and on any vehicle I have driven maybe you could try a phone app based one on a phone mount

I'd sooner keep my phone for phoning if possible - handsfree of course!

I did this in my Custom, I used a disc https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/sat-nav/ac ... isks/stuck to the black mesh/dotty bit and ran the cable as you've suggested. worked fine and it was so unobtrusive that I hardly even removed it when I parked.

Sounds a good idea but do you mean on the mesh part in front of the radio screen?

No, top of the screen where a rear view mirror would be.

I see what you mean - the Custom plastic bit must be abit different to the mk8. That seems like the way to go, hopefully the charger lead will be long enough to route out of sight?

IIRC I used a USB extension cable.

As a former courier I loved Tom Tom however that was before Google Maps, in my mind google wipes the floor with any satnav and is updated constantly. I am looking at some way of installing a permanent screen though possibly an android tablet to free up my phone.

I'm keen to see what route you take.

I agree with Ashlemon. Used to swear by Tomtom but google maps/Satnav is far better. Once you try it you will never go back.

How accurate do you find the traffic info on Google maps?

Very good, it works live so will reroute you if there are problems ahead in the journey. Also it suggests adaptations to the route to save you a determined time if the option becomes available, you dont have to take the route but it will ask you.

The good thing about google is its evolving very fast and constantly updating. This will continue due to the size and power of the company, it will be incredibly hard for other companies to compete.

Thanks, I’ll give it a go. I’ve tried Waze but the live traffic is hit n miss at best, so I’ve just used IOS maps on the odd occasion that I need nav these days.

Cheers. I didn’t renew my subs to TT after they started discontinuing support for older units and generally making up their own rules about what “lifetime” means.
