Has anyone had a MK8 stolen by having their OBD port hacked?

Postby motorhomer2018 » Tue Oct 22, 2019 3:25 pm

Afternoon all.
As you can see from my username I am a motorhomer :D
My current motorhome is based on a MK8 transit as opposed to 90% of motorhomes that are on a FIAT

I am getting bored of defending Fords on motorhome forums as people just assume that as the MK7 is stolen easily then so will the MK8.

Setting aside getting and OBD lock, disklok, pedal lock or new door lock fitted

Has anyone ever had a Transit MK8 stolen where the engine was started by means of the OBD port.

I would like to end once and all people slagging off Ford MK8's over what is an inferior base model (The Fiat Ducato)

Thanks for taking time to read this

I don’t know anyone personally but I think it’s true they can be stolen the same way as a mk 7 s are you have listed every thing I have done to mine every bit you can do to make it more difficult has to help if a working van is nicked it’s not good especially if the owner looses the tools of his trade and can’t work till van replaced but for a camper especially a self built like mine you can’t just go out and replace it easily. So for any van thieves who steel vans to brake please stick to large company fleets of vans who can stand the lose better not us poor camper van owners

Mate the thread above created by LUKE is by far the best OBD mod to make wannabe thieves pull their hair out and definitely give up, short of getting the whole vehicle recovered (and that is if they have the space). This is something I'm yet to do, but I know I will sleep a lot better at night after doing it.

Like Dumper said if it is a self built camper, you better get this done, because they are irreplaceable really...

To true jay how can you put a true price on one that an insurance company will believe I think the way they work you’d have a fight on to get what it’s true value is

2 things.

It appears no one................. yet.......... has had their Mk8 stolen

But more importantly ................ I love that OBD solution. :D :D :D :D :D :D

When I get the motorhome out of storage I will see if it is within my skill level.

If not, how much would an auto tech in Manchester charge to do it?

Yeah I mean I've owned my mk7 for quite a while... 2 reasons I won't go the whole hog with it: I can't afford to lol and I know in the worst case scenario insurance isn't guaranteed ever!

I guarantee you one thing without even searching, MK8 Transits have been stolen numerous times.

God knows how much you will be charged for such a job. It's unique. Different auto electricians will charge a different amount, based on time and whatever else. Sometimes things that seem reasonably straight forward can randomly just take ages. Some probably won't even do it because auto electricians/ diagnostic guys live and die by the OBD port lol. I personally know that this mod is within my skill level. Just need to find the right plug and get it done.

According to Luke's tutorial that seems perfect, count the wires into your OBD port, the same seller has an 8 pin one.

Luke used an 8 pin, your OBD might have extra wires or less wires, check to make sure.

8 pin:

GOOD FIND THOUGH

It was based on the fact that he "naughty people" might have an 8 pin adaptor on them already...... doubt they would carry a 10 pin one

I doubt that very much and it's the sequence of wiring you use as well. They won't know that and they will not even bother once they see the obd port has been modified. Far too much time and hassle... BUT honestly it won't be an issue if you use the 10 pin
