Hi Frag, could it be as simple as an iffy water pump? Might be the easiest/cheapest/quickest 'punt' to resolve the problem?

It made the 90 mile journey home without fault yesterday.

I can't see it being the water pump, apart from if they're leaking,I've never known a water pump fault.
I've heard tales of the impeller being faulty, coming loose on the driveshaft, but I've never seen that.
Haven't even seen a leaky one since we stopped looking after mk6's.
Given the distances your covering without fault, and it only overheating briefly, think your problem lies elsewhere.

Gonna be hard to fix without seeing,or being able to replicate the fault.
Is the viscous fan still in place ? Blades all ok ?

The symptoms are very much head gasket but really uncommon on that engine.

Oh,and being a 66 plate,if that reg number is correct,it's still in warranty till January, why are you or your independent garage even attempting to fix this issue :?:

It's a grey import via Gibraltar so only comes with 2 years warranty.....but you do save £5,000. Cost me £22k when Ford wanted £27k. Anyway, it's back with Ford today.

Back from Ford. They did a vacuum flush (??) and think there was some air in the system. They want us to do some miles now but they admit they're flummoxed. To be fair, at least they drove it for 60 to 80 miles.

Hi I am experiencing the same issues. Did you resolve the issue? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Cheers
