Should I be putting in expensive diesel into my motorhome?

Postby motorhomer2018 » Fri Nov 22, 2019 11:52 am

Morning all, its me the motorhomer again.

Quick question.

Since getting injector 2 changed about 8 months ago my engine 2.0 euro6 130hp engine has been running fine, in fact, I still prefer driving the van over my sporty petrol civic :D

But as all my cars and motorbikes over 30 years have been unleaded (and leaded) I am still learning about diesel.

My options are :-

Supermarket (asda) :- 125p
Esso standard :- 127p
Esso supreme :- 135p
Costco supreme??? :- 124p ................... does anyone know if this is actually "supreme"

I currently find I get 32 mpg in a 3.5T motorhome................... I do about 6000 miles a year, which is basically drive for a 100 miles stop, camp, then drive back again

I try and keep the engine somewhere between 1500 and 2000 revs as that is, according to a graph, where the torque is :?:

Additionally, what is the boards views on after market additives?

Thanks as always for any advice given

I’ve tryed standard shell and v power no significant better mpg just more to pay to fill up if I fill up in town I have to use supermarket fuel as both the jet stations have been done for credit card fraud and pump fraud

Thanks for the quick response?

May I ask why Shell and not Esso?

I ask, as being a caravaner I get a few pennies off per litre through a club I'm in

The Esso near us has a similar reputation to the supermarket near Dumper. I'm sure the standard fuel is fine, if you're using super, then Shell V Power is generally considered to be the best.

I also have a euro 6 motorhome, for many years now I have used a diesel additive called Diesel Rhino.
It's a cetane improver, injector cleaner and lubricant - claims to be similar to the 'V power' premium diesels but works out cheaper.
There are other cetane improvers such as Millers ecomax, If I use supermarket diesel I double up on the dosage.
The DPF on the euro 6 is close to the exhaust manifold so warms up quickly.
Long drives are beneficial as opposed to short, start - stop journeys and it's also good to give the engine a few revs now and then (the old Italian tune up).
I have always used the Diesel Rhino additive on every fill up so I can't give you a view on whether there's a noticeable difference from standard diesel.

I think 32mpg for a motor home is good.
Ive got a L4H3 2ltr 2018 and the best ive had so far is 32mpg on long journeys (unfinished camper van ).
Currently im hovering at 31.7 doing daily 50 mile runs in half busy traffic half motorway coasting at 60.

Ive only ever used Morrisons fuel due to the price, but this thread is making me think about other fuels.

Do you use the motorhome daily?
I'm thinking using premium fuel or an additive might help if the vehicle sits un-used for extended periods?
Wurth do fuel additives. Never used but everything else Wurth I rate.

Hi, we currently use it every 2 weeks (its cold out there you know  ), this is mainly to keep the engine battery topped up as that is not connected to any solar panels (yet).

But on the plus side the engine is always hot when I turn it off

I have had a quick look at :-
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Diesel-Additiv ... B06XQ7GWSJ

which works out at 4p / litre.

My concern is will Ford (bless their cotton socks) invalid any warranty claim for using an aftermarket product, and more importantly has this additive been tested on euro6 engines.......

I don't know if the newer engines (with adblue) are pinickity about things like that :?:
