Flat battery symptoms but batteries seem good

Postby Jasef1970 » Sun Mar 29, 2020 8:38 pm

Hi all. I have a 2014 350 transit 2.2. When I try to start it I usually get all dash lights (sometimes not)but when I turn engine over it is really slow and will only crank for a few seconds then it will start clicking then everything goes off. Today it started all be it very slowly and drove fine for 30 miles until I stopped for fuel then it wouldn’t restart. I called a mate who came out and stuck jumped leads on it but it still only spun over slowly and for a few seconds so we then towed it and after a few attempts it started ,so I set off but it wouldn’t go over 55 on the motorway but it did drive another 40 miles and got me home.once home I turned it off and now it won’t wind over even with leads on it. Any ideas would be appreciated. I am pretty good with motors but I’m stumped at mo. Cheers guys

Have you had the batteries drop tested if you’re battery is really bad sometimes they will not jump off

The chances are that a 350 has two batteries, and the symptoms sound like the batteries are struggling. If they're both original (2014) they may both need replacing. It may also be an idea to check the alternator output

Hi. Thanks for replies yes it has 2 batteries and no I haven’t drop tested them yet I have them on charge am I right in thinking I can drop test them with a multi meter by connecting the meter and watching what it drops to whilst I crank the van over?also I think I have discovered the lack of power problem I have a puddle of diesel along the top of the engine where the injectors sit I would imagine seals?are they easy enough to change. Cheers guys

Yes ignition is one of many things that has crossed my mind. Does any of you think it could be the starter?and does the bcm have anything to do with the starting sequence? Cheers

You need a heavy duty one that puts a heavy load on them it’s not so much about voltage it’s more about the amps I still use a older type one that has coils that heat up when you put a load on them and the gauge on the side gives a reading of state of the battery .

had a similar problem with my mk8, turned out to be a seized alternator, try taking the drive belt off and turning it over
