Mk 8 460 clutch

Postby dumper » Sat Jun 13, 2020 9:11 am

I have a strange problem with my clutch slipping the first time it did it I was reverseing up a slightly steep driveway to turn round when it started slipping that was two years ago and never did it again until just before cv19 started again turning round it did it again but this time but on pulling away up a hill it was wet and cold and this time so may have been just the road conditions.
i have tried the usual test on the clutch trying to take off with foot on the brake and high revs and it just stalls the next time I take it for a run I will try it in 3 rd to see if I can make it slip talking to x work mate he as had similar problem with his 350 mk8 his has done a lot more miles then mine .mine is only on 32000 and I’ve never had a clutch go on me for slipping u usually changed for judder or difficult getting into gear at 100,000 plus miles before I go changing the clutch is there something that else that can effect it electrically as a safeguard or something .cheers

As it was on a hill, both times, my money would be on the HLA messing around, it can feel a bit like clutch slip

Cheers Al is that the hill start assist I have that turned off as been a old git this is not one of the modern tech I don’t like it just seems strange usually when a clutch starts slipping it only gets worse that what makes me think it maybe something with the electric side of the system it’s like when I turn off the traction control it will still cut back in even in reverse or forwards at less the then 30 mph .

Oh well, if you've turned off HLA then it can't be that, it was just a thought before you go looking for a clutch fault :?

Strange, I'm an old git as well, but I love these modern aids to driving, my old original Sherpa never had disc brakes or power steering, (or any power!) and that was a challenge to drive.

Modern vans, you just have to turn up, and they drive themselves

It’s the electronics I don’t like traction control/anti stall / hill start that you cannot turn fully off all the other toys you get I would miss I’d prefer everything to be on a on and off switch and not have to go through a setup menu on the steering wheel my first driving lesson was in a mk1 v4 transit you controlled it not it controlling you. But I wouldn’t want to go back to living then I’d miss the rest of the modern world apart what’s going on right now.

The noise from the diesel one that I had would defy a dead person to fall asleep. I tried fitting a radio in mine, but you could only use it when the engine was off!
Having said that, it did at least steer from the front end, unlike my Mk1 Transit which steered like a fork lift truck.

Sorry Dumper, I'll edit my ramblings from your post and put it back on track later, when I'm on the computer

My hi ramble internal vans are if you think Sherpas are a safe van we had 4 on the fleet and 75 mk2 transits over that period two of the Sherpas got written off but only 3 transits but if you are a plumber two wear plumbers vans but to stick up for the plumbers one was parked up when a drunk motorcycle ran in the back of it as for noise a CFH Bedford takes the biscuit never driven a van as bad it had a Perkins 4108 in it compare to that the transit was like a Rolls-Royce

Found out my clutch problem or I should say Henderson transmissions have while it was in for a axle ratio change from 3.1 to 3.7 I decided to have the clutch done as well turn out that at only 7000 kilometres it had had the box out for some reason and a torq bit had been left on a bolt on the slave cylinder and eventually fallen off and jammed it up at times and that and done some to damage inside the Bell housing .

Yes Al from driving it and having the problem and then trying to make it slip and not being able I was thinking maybe it was sticking where the thrust bearing runs on the gearbox tube I remember that when the MT 75 box first came out we had loads go back under warranty to replace the alloy tube with a steel one and it maybe something similar.
If I hadn’t found someone to change the crown wheel and pinion I would’ve probably left it till later as it was there I thought may as well get it done at the same time . As it had only done 7000 kilometres what is the box been out for maybe a warranty job or really have some abuse before I got it

I remember 30+ years ago being a apprentice Mechanic and buying a Snap on 1/2 inch combo spanner £6 it was out of my £28 wages. Lost it a few days later  one year later Vauxhall chevette came in for its annual service, and my spanner was sitting on top of the wing where the bonnet meets it :D So things like this do happen.

We have all been there my magnetic snap on screwdriver had a year long ride in the middle of the V underneath the pump on a V8 ford cargo only turned up after replacing it it’s surprising what turns up underneath the bonnet at times .Back then I paid £3 a week to snap on I hate to think what new lads starting out have to pay a week now just looking at the size of most boxes back then you throw away the trays and put all your spanners of one type in one drawer now everything has its own place witch means a bigger box.
